Friends of Five Rivers

Friends of Five Rivers This is the official page for the Friends of Five Rivers, a non-profit support organization in Delmar, NY.

Our mission is to support environmental education and our vision is to cultivate and inspire lifelong environmental stewards. Friends of Five Rivers is a non-for-profit group providing support to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar, NY. Friends was incorporated as Five Rivers Limited in 1972 when the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) established Five

Rivers Environmental Education Center at the former Delmar Experimental Game Farm. The Center and property are owned and operated by the NYSDEC. In partnership, the two organizations work together to provide visitors with an educational experience. Friends provides unique and creative environmental education activities year-round for adults and families, including:

* Guided School Program (GSP) for thousands of students and their teachers and chaperones annually, from New York’s Capital District and surrounding areas, and as far away as Vermont.

* Collaborating with the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy to obtain land to protect wildlife habitat
* Staffing and administering the greeter program at the Visitor Center.

* Organizing events and activities such as the annual Fall Festival, the popular birdseed sale, art programs, educational speakers, and more.

* Granting the Wendy Suozzo Memorial Award, a scholarship for high school seniors in the area. With the support of Friends members, our partnership with the Department of Environmental Conservation, and our volunteer instructors and greeters, we are able to provide our visitors with an unmatched environmental education experience.

All New Yorkers and visitors should be able to access, enjoy, and feel welcome on state lands. These lands are for all of us, our families, our friends, and our neighbors. While enjoying these shared spaces, be respectful of other visitors. Share trails, treat people with kindness, and leave things as you found them for others to enjoy. 🏳️‍🌈

Join us on Saturday, June 6 from 9am to 12pm for National Trails Day! We’ll be doing the next phase of our Beaver Tree Trail Stewardship Project, and we need YOU! We’ll plant hundreds of trees and shrubs in a restoration area where invasive species were removed during three prior service events. Participants must be able to walk up and down hill, use hand tools, and enjoy getting their hands dirty. Older children and adults are best suited to this activity, but there will be a small service project in our mini-forest for families with small children.

Registration is required. Sign-up by Wednesday, June 3 via email at [email protected] or by calling 518-475-0291. **Please tell us number of volunteers and their ages (if volunteer is a minor) when you register**

A honey of a road trip!

Our honeybee hives were visited by a bear multiple times in mid-May, always at night, and always leaving the hives in disarray and the bees distressed. In a last-ditch effort to outsmart the bear, we have temporarily relocated the hives to the BeECO (Bethlehem Environmental Commons) farm in Glenmont. Don’t worry; we plan to bring the bees back to Five Rivers in mid- to late June. By then the bear should have moved on and our bees will be secure in their home once again.

Many thanks to Ursula Bauer, volunteer beekeeper, who coordinated the effort, and to Jonah Doudoukjian and Ian Cote who provided the muscle. Additional assistance was provided by Miles Garfinkel and Mary Louise Stanford from Friends of Five Rivers board of directors.
