We focus on environmental issues, like the abandoned nuclear waste at the shutdown San Onofre power plant. The Samuel Lawrence Foundation strives to promote broader community access to science, education, and the arts. Whether advocating for the safer storage of nuclear waste, teaching about sustainable practices, or sponsoring climate events, the Samuel Lawrence Foundation is committed to building a more informed and engaged community.

SAVE THE DATE 🌊

August 20, 2026

Join us for our San Onofre Symposium: Nuclear Waste to Clean Energy!

We're bringing together leading scientists, policymakers, business leaders, and energy experts at the iconic Scripps Seaside Forum in La Jolla for a day of panels, dialogue, and a clear-eyed look at what to do with the nuclear waste at San Onofre and what Southern California's energy future requires.

Bipartisan legislation just introduced in Congress would direct the NIH to study the long-term health effects of nuclear radiation specifically on women and girls, including pregnant women, adolescent girls, and pre-adolescent girls, with a minimum 10-year monitoring requirement.

The Radiation Health Research Act, introduced by Reps. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Mike Levin (D-CA), acknowledges what the science has long suggested but policy has been slow to act on: radiation exposure does not affect everyone equally, and the most vulnerable populations have been the least studied.

This matters at San Onofre. 3.6 million pounds of spent nuclear fuel sit 100 feet from the Pacific Ocean, within 50 miles of nine million people, including families, children, and communities who have never been asked whether they consent to that risk.

We commend Reps. Lawler and Levin for closing this research gap and look forward to following this bill through the legislative process.

πŸ‘‰ "If you are somewhere where severe earthquakes or tsunamis occur, it is more of a question mark.” - Elon Musk, Business Insider, March 2022

He also said solar and battery storage are civilization's long-term energy future. Hard to argue. πŸ’š

But here's what he left out: when you close a nuclear plant, the waste doesn't leave with it. ☒️

San Onofre shut down but what remained: 123 thin-wall canisters holding 3.6 million pounds of spent nuclear fuel, on the Southern California coast, in ❗earthquake country, 100 feet from the Pacific, within 50 miles of 8 million people.

The canisters aren't going anywhere.

The question mark is still here.

When floods take the roads the school takes the river. 🌊

In Bangladesh's Chalan Beel wetlands, 26 solar-powered boats reach 2,300 children every day. A 100% exam passing rate. A 53% increase in family income. Education that floods cannot stop.

The Samuel Lawrence Foundation has supported the Floating Schools of Bangladesh since 2018 because climate justice does not stop at the California coastline.

The same ocean rising in Bangladesh is the same ocean 100 feet from San Onofre's nuclear waste canisters.

It's Still On The Beach.

☒️ 3,550,000 lbs of nuclear waste. ☒️

Your Beach. Their Waste.

Next to the 5 freeway.

This isn't hypothetical.

πŸ‘‰This is San Onofre. Right now.

Radiation exposure is linked to cancer risk and millions live within 50 miles.

We're fighting to change this.

Fifty nations just met in Colombia, without a single fossil fuel lobbyist in the room.

Bill McKibben calls it a hinge moment. We think he's right.

While clean energy surges globally, the US is quietly rolling back radiation safety standards, eliminating scientific advisory boards, and asking private industry to solve a nuclear waste problem 40 years in the making.

At the Samuel Lawrence Foundation, we believe the hinge only swings forward if communities stay informed, stay loud, and stay in the room.
