Simmering ocean temperatures and an upcoming El Niño are already hitting our San Diego coastlines hard 🌊💔 Recent heat waves have left local waters significantly warmer than average, and researchers are witnessing a devastating spike in starving seabirds and marine life washing ashore.

We can’t stop the heat wave overnight, but we CAN protect the wildlife that still have a chance and contribute to the vital science tracking this crisis.

If you are out on San Diego beaches this summer, save this guide or screenshot the flyer (next slide) so you know exactly who to call:

🔹 Entangled Marine Mammals: Call 1-877-SOS-WHALE or hail Coast Guard Channel 16.

🔹 Injured, Sick, or Stranded Marine Life/Birds: Call 1-800-541-SEAL or report at sdhumane.org/projectwildlife.

🔹 Deceased Marine Wildlife: Help scientists monitor environmental threats by filing a CDFW Mortality Report and request removal through San Diego’s Get It Done App.

🚫 CRITICAL: Do not approach, touch, or attempt to move any wildlife yourself. Keep your distance, document the location, and let the experts handle it.

This Sunday, WILDCOAST joins the World Ocean Day Festival at Bosque de Chapultepec in Mexico City — a landmark event bringing together government, academia, civil society, and coastal communities around marine conservation.

Our own Tannia Frausto will be featured in the "Restoration of Seas and Coasts" panel alongside SEMARNAT, WWF, and GIZ. Our film Guardians of the Wild will also be screened throughout the day.

A powerful reminder that protecting the ocean is collective work. 🌊

Exciting news for the San Diego conservation community! We are officially launching the MPA Watch community science monitoring program. 🌊

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are critical to safeguarding our ocean ecosystems, but effective management requires data. Through MPA Watch, volunteers are trained to observe and collect standardized data on human activity along our protected coastlines. This crucial information directly informs management decisions and helps track how coastal usage changes over time.

We are looking for dedicated local volunteers to join this effort. If you are passionate about ocean stewardship, sustainability, and community science, this is an excellent opportunity to make a tangible impact.

Volunteer Requirements:
- Must be 18 years or older and reside in San Diego County.
- Able to walk outside on uneven beach terrain.
- Able to commit to a minimum of two surveys per month for at least three months.
- No prior scientific background is required, we provide all the training you need to become an effective ocean steward.
