New visitors are showing up in Southern California!

El Niño is bringing unusually warm ocean conditions to our coast, and with warmer water comes some unexpected visitors.

Whale sharks, devil rays, tropical Pacific orcas, hammerhead sharks, olive ridley turtles, and pilot whales have all been spotted farther north than we would typically expect.

While these sightings can be exciting, they’re also a reminder that our ocean is changing. El Niño is a natural climate pattern, but as our oceans continue to warm, understanding how these changes affect marine life is more important than ever.

WILDCOAST and the San Diego Natural History Museum are bringing Guardians of the Wild to The Nat on September 29, and you do not want to miss this!

From Oaxaca's nesting sea turtles to the wild coastal deserts of Baja California, this film puts you face to face with the communities and conservationists fighting to protect Mexico's most irreplaceable wild places.

After the film, WILDCOAST Executive Director Serge Dedina leads a live panel with top conservation scientists and advocates from San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, Sierra Club San Diego, and WILDCOAST.

El Niño is back, and our corals are going to feel the heat.

El Niño brings unusually warm ocean water, and when that heat combines with a warming ocean, coral reefs can face even greater stress. The result? Coral bleaching.

When corals become stressed by excessive heat, they can lose the tiny algae they depend on for food and color, causing them to turn white. While bleached corals can recover, prolonged or severe bleaching can have lasting impacts on reefs and the communities and ecosystems that depend on them.

Coral reefs may cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they support an estimated 25% of marine species and provide important benefits for fisheries, tourism, coastal protection, and biodiversity.

At WILDCOAST, we monitor and protect coral reefs across Mexico through conservation, research, and community education. Protecting healthy reefs gives these ecosystems a better chance to withstand climate stress and recover.

There are ways we can all help: reduce climate impacts and pollution, be responsible when visiting reefs, support conservation efforts, and spread the word about why healthy oceans matter. 💙🪸

The Cigarette Surfboard follows impassioned surfer Taylor Lane as he collects 10,000 cigarette butts from California beaches and builds a fully functional surfboard — turning Big Tobacco’s toxic plastic waste into a rallying cry for ocean stewardship. This film proves that grassroots action moves mountains.

At WILDCOAST, we protect the coastlines these surfers ride, the waters these communities depend on, and the ecosystems that make all of it possible—from the California-Oregon border all the way down to Oaxaca. September 5 is California Free Fishing Day — no license required. 🎣🌊

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned angler, it’s a great excuse to get out on the water. Just remember — no license doesn’t mean no rules. All fishing regulations still apply.

Before you cast:
1. Know your bag and size limits
2. Use permitted gear during legal hours
3. Respect Marine Protected Areas — some zones prohibit fishing entirely, and for good reason

Responsible fishing keeps our coastal ecosystems healthy for everyone. Check local regulations at wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing
