The American Quilt Study Group annual seminar is a multi-day gathering for people interested in quilt history, textile research, and beyond. It combines museum access, educational lectures, hands-on study sessions, tours, exhibitions, auctions, vendors and social events into one conference experience.

Attendees spend their time learning directly from quilt historians, curators, conservators, collectors, and researchers through presentations and small-group study sessions where quilts and historic textiles can often be examined up close. Seminar also includes behind-the-scenes museum tours, opportunities to discuss and analyze quilts, and community events like exhibits, vendors, receptions, book sales, and show-and-tell sessions.

Dr. Marybeth C. Stalp is Professor of Sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. She engages in qualitative research focused on feminine leisure, or “how women have fun throughout the life course.” Stalp has studied quilters and artists, craftivism, the Red Hat Society, and most recently how sewists, quilters and 3D printing enthusiasts developed extensive networks to make and distribute Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to organizations and individuals during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Dr. Braden Leap (co-author) is Associate Professor of Sociology at Mississippi State University. He studies country music and how people respond to socio-ecological transformations, disruptions, and disasters.

Dr. Kimberly Kelly (co-author) is a qualitative sociologist at Mississippi State University whose research uses interview-based methods to explore health, gender, and inequality, with close attention to lived experience and social context. Her work examines health, gender, and inequality, with a particular interest in how people navigate institutions and respond to constraints in everyday life. Her research is grounded in in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, with an emphasis on lived experience, meaning-making, and social context. She has led and collaborated on multiple interview-based studies across health and social policy domains. In the COVID-19 volunteer mask-making project, she brought interviewing and analytic experience to the study, helping to document how volunteers understood their labor, motivations, and community commitments during a moment of collective crisis.

In 1835 German immigrant Johann Ludwig Stifel started an indigo textile dyeing business in Wheeling, WV. Production started from J.L Stifel’s first ten yards of dyed cloth, sold locally. Company production peaked at three and a half million yards of fabric a month with extensive international sales. The J.L. Stifel & Sons company produced fabrics of various weights for a variety of purposes with light weight fabrics being used mainly for clothing, quilting, and other home decorating purposes. The company weathered three major wars and several economic recessions/depressions until its final closure in 1957. This research tells the story of a poor immigrant and his descendants who lived the American dream.

Terry Tickhill Terrell is a member of the American Quilt Study Group, has published articles in both “Uncoverings” and “Blanket Statements”, and is webmaster and chief creator of content for the “Floral Motifs on Early Chintz” website (flowersonchintz.com). She has given presentations on textile history to a variety of groups including the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Williamsburg, the Denver Botanic Garden’s School of Botanical Art & Illustration, and regional and local quilt study groups. Her interests include the sources and evolution of quilt textile designs, the close association between botanical illustration and early English chintz, industrial production of chintz and indigo textiles, and center medallion and chintz appliqué quilts.

Susan started quilting in 1984 after her mother gifted her a stack of fat quarters and a private hand piecing lesson. She taught herself patchwork from Georgia Bonesteel’s books and started collecting antique and vintage quilts in the 1990’s. After several false starts, Susan finally learned hand applique from Elly Sienkiewicz and then followed Elly down the rabbit hole of quilt history, design, and research.

After graduating from Wellesley College and Vanderbilt University Medical School, Susan pursued a thirty-seven year career as an academic pediatric critical care physician. After she retired, she went back to school at the University of Rhode Island where she earned a M.S. degree in textile history and conservation. Presenting her research at AQSG has been one of her enduring goals.

✨Austen Villacis is an independent curator and writer based in Los Angeles. He holds an M.A. in Curatorial Practices from the University of Southern California, where he researched American quilting histories and exhibition histories of folk and outsider art. As a recipient of an American Quilt Study Group Fellowship, he is excited to further explore quilt history, material culture, and the stories quilts preserve.✨
