πŸ™πŸΎ THANK YOU, COMMUNITY πŸ™πŸΎ

School started yesterday, and we can confidently say: almost 50 local families walked into the first day with everything they needed to start the year off right. That happened because of YOU.

This was our very first Back to School Resource Market β€” a reimagining of our annual back to school event into something that reaches families in a deeper, more meaningful way. And from the moment registration opened, we saw exactly how needed this was β€” all 50 family spots filled in just ONE DAY.

None of this would have been possible without this incredible community. A huge thank you to:

πŸ’‡πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ Amber Bruce and the stylist community β€” Grooming Grab Bags for our girls
🍎 Marcus McQueen β€” fueling our students with the Ready Set Go Snack Packs
🧠 Coy Jackson and team β€” Calm Corner items to keep our students focused and grounded
πŸŽ’ Quick Drills and Nasir Shabazz β€” making sure every student had a backpack
🧺 Ascentra Credit Union β€” our Fresh Start Laundry Kits, snacks AND clothing basics!

ALSO..

Thanks to Pam Seales, Eva Andrews and Dashauna Shipp for volunteering AND Community Health Care (CHC) and City of Davenport Citibus for having resources available for those families!

To everyone who donated, volunteered, showed up, or shared this with a friend β€” THANK YOU. You are the village that made this happen, and you are the reason nearly 50 families started this school year with confidence instead of worry.

This was our first Back to School Resource Market β€” but it will NOT be our last. 🌟

πŸŽ’ IT TAKES A VILLAGE πŸŽ’

And our village is SHOWING UP. πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

This year, we refocused our annual Back to School event into something bigger β€” the Back-to-School Resource Market β€” because getting our kids ready for school takes a community. And that's exactly what we've got.

Look at who's stepping up:

πŸ’‡πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ Amber Bruce rallied the stylist community for our Grooming Grab Bags β€” girls' edition
πŸ’‡πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ Whitney Joyner is making sure our young men have wave caps, brushes, and everything they need to stay fresh
🍎 Marcus McQueen is fueling our students for the first week with the Ready Set Go Snack Packs
🧠 Coy Jackson and team are collecting items to help our students stay calm and focused
πŸŽ’ Quick Drills and Nasir Shabazz are making sure every student has a backpack
🧺 Ascentra Credit Union is putting together our Fresh Start Laundry Kits and tag teaming with...
πŸ‘• Ed Dawson and friends for the Clothing Reboot Closet collecting everyday essentials every kid needs

This isn't just an event. This is our community, TOGETHER, making sure our kids start the school year strong β€” from head to toe, mind to backpack. πŸ’ͺ🏾

And here's why it matters: we opened registration and all 50 family spots filled in just ONE DAY. That's not just excitement β€” that's need. Real families, right here in our community, counting on this.

To everyone stepping up: THANK YOU. This is what it looks like when a village shows up for its children.

Want to be part of it too? Contact TMBC β€” there's still room for our village to grow. 🀝

πŸ’ Thursday Thoughts | Doing A Lot With A Little

Let me take you back for a second.

When my kids were young I could'nt always afford to take them to the movie theater. Movie tickets, concessions, the whole experience β€” it adds up fast. But my kids deserved that magic. So I created it myself.

I would wait until the movie was available to rent. Then I would set up our front door like a ticket counter β€” and give each of my kids a few pennies to "pay" their way in. πŸ˜„ We had a concession table with homemade popcorn, fresh baked goods, and a big pitcher of Kool-Aid. The lights went down. The movie came on. And we were AT the movies.

They didn't know the difference. They just knew it was special. And honestly β€” so did I. πŸ₯Ή

That experience has never left me. And it shows up in everything I do at TMBC Lincoln Resource Center every single day.

Because here's the truth about nonprofit work β€” you will never have enough money to do everything you want to do. Never. The budget will always fall short of the vision. The resources will always feel smaller than the need. That's just the reality of this space. And you have two choices β€” you can let that stop you, or you can make the popcorn anyway. 🍿

We choose to make the popcorn. Every single time.

But I want to talk about something else today. Something that I think gets misunderstood when people hear the word philanthropy.
We often picture philanthropy as a grand gesture. A check with a lot of zeros. A gala. A naming opportunity on the side of a building. And yes β€” those things matter and we are grateful for every dollar that comes our way.

But philanthropy β€” true giving β€” starts with caring. It starts with someone deciding that what happens in their community matters to them. It starts with a person giving what they are capable of giving β€” whether that's twenty dollars, two hours of their time, a bag of popcorn kernels, or a box of books for a child who has never owned one.

The size of the gift has never determined the size of the impact. πŸ™πŸΎ

Some of the most meaningful contributions to this work have come from people who didn't think they had much to give. But they gave anyway. And that giving β€” multiplied across a community of people who care β€” is what keeps the lights on, the programs running, and the doors open for every family that walks through them.

You don't have to wait until you can write a big check to make a difference. Start with caring. Give what you can. Show up how you're able.

That's where it all begins. That's where it always has. πŸ–€

πŸ–€ A huge THANK YOU to Amazon!

We are so grateful for the generous donations that keep coming our way β€” and the impact goes further than you might think.

Amazon's support helps us keep our building and office running smoothly, so we can stay focused on the work that matters. It allows us to support other organizations in our network who are out here doing incredible things for this community. And it puts real resources directly into the hands of families right here in our neighborhood who need it most. πŸ™πŸΎ

This is what community partnership looks like at its finest β€” a company using its reach to pour back into the communities it serves. That kind of investment creates a ripple effect that touches more lives than we can even count. 🌊

We don't take it for granted. Not for one second. ❀️

And because Amazon keeps showing up for us β€” we get to keep showing up for YOU. πŸ‘€

Speaking of which… πŸ‘€πŸ‘€

Something fun is coming VERY soon. If you know about the Mystery Box Giveaway β€” you already know. And if you don't… stay tuned. You're going to want to be ready. πŸ“¦βœ¨

πŸ’ Thursday Thoughts | We're Not Just Building Programs. We're Building a Legacy.

Let me paint you a picture.

A child walks through our doors for afterschool programming. Maybe they're in 3rd grade. Maybe they're quiet at first β€” just figuring out where they fit. And then something clicks. Maybe it's Pena’s boxing gym. Maybe it's the art classes at Azubuike. Maybe it's just the feeling of belonging somewhere that does it. But something clicks β€” and they keep coming back. πŸ₯ŠπŸŽ¨

And we keep showing up for them.

That same child grows up a little. Now they're in Camp Amp summer programming. Now they're a rising freshman and we have something built specifically for THEM β€” Gear Up designed to bridge that gap between middle school and high school. And then as a sophomore we don't let go. We keep walking alongside them. And by the time they're a junior or senior β€” they're in Hustle U, preparing for the workforce, for college, for life. Not because it happened by accident. Because we built a pipeline on purpose. πŸŽ“

And here's what's exciting β€” we're not done building.

We recognized a gap for that 12 to 15 year old age group. That critical window where so much can go right β€” or wrong β€” depending on what's around them. And instead of talking about it, we're doing something about it. New programming is being created specifically for that age group because no child in our community should fall through the cracks on our watch. πŸ™πŸΎ

But here's what makes all of this mean something beyond the programs themselves.

It's the families. The parents who started bringing their kids to afterschool who are now showing up to our events. The neighbors who started following us on Facebook and are now walking through our doors. The community we have intentionally outreached to β€” because we know that a community center has to actually be IN the community to serve it. We see the neighborhood. We see the needs. And we respond. 🏘️

There is a difference between being seen as a building and being seen as a mission.

When people see us as just a building β€” we're a place. When people see us for what we actually are β€” an organization committed to empowering, educating, and engaging youth, families, and community β€” great things happen. Doors open. Partnerships form. Resources follow. Lives change.

We are not just running programs. We are creating a legacy. One child, one family, one neighborhood at a time. And every single piece of it is connected β€” intentionally, purposefully, and with love. πŸ–€

This is what it looks like when a community center actually shows up for its community. And we are just getting started. 🌟

πŸ’ Thursday Thoughts is a weekly series where we talk honestly about the nonprofit space, community, and the work that drives us. There's always something worth talking about β€” so come back every Thursday, join the conversation, and bring somebody with you. πŸ™πŸΎ
