πŸ’ Thursday Thoughts | A Book Can Change Everything

I was a library kid. πŸ“š

Saturday mornings meant one thing β€” returning last week's books and checking out new ones. And I loved every single second of it. I loved writing my name on that little card to check out a book. There was something about that moment that felt official. Like the book and I had made a commitment to each other. πŸ˜„

I would escape into Betsey's neighborhood. I would sit alongside Encyclopedia Brown and help him crack another mystery. I was GONE β€” transported somewhere completely different from wherever I was sitting. And I never wanted to come back.

Now look β€” there were no phones, no social media, none of the distractions that pull at our kids today. But honestly? Even if there were β€” I think I still would have chosen browsing through the shelves and finding a good read over all of it. Every single time. πŸ“–

I want you to think back to a book that meant something to you. Maybe it was the first time you saw a character that looked like you. Maybe it was a story that made you feel less alone. Maybe it was the first time reading stopped feeling like a chore and started feeling like a superpower.

Now imagine a child in our community who never gets that moment. Not because they don't want it β€” but because no one ever put the right book in their hands.

That's the gap we're talking about. And it's bigger than most people realize.

The disparities in kindergarten preparedness and 3rd grade reading proficiency in our community are real and they are serious. Research tells us that children who can't read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. But here's what else research tells us β€” reading aloud to children builds vocabulary, strengthens critical thinking, sparks imagination, and develops empathy. A child who loves reading is a child who is building the foundation for everything that comes after. πŸ“–

And representation MATTERS. When a child opens a book and sees a character who looks like them, talks like them, and lives a life they recognize β€” something shifts. They don't just read the story. They see themselves IN the story. That is powerful beyond measure. πŸ™πŸΎ

At TMBC Lincoln Resource Center, our free library exists because we believe every child deserves access to books β€” not just at school, but at HOME. Building a personal library as a child is one of the greatest gifts a family can give. So tomorrow we are holding our 5th Annual Book Drive with KWQC and we are asking our community to show up! πŸŽ‰

Here's how YOU can be a part of closing the gap πŸ‘‡πŸΎ
πŸ“š Donate books at our Book Drive tomorrow with KWQC
πŸ™‹πŸΎ Volunteer to help organize our free library
πŸ“– Sit down and read to a kid β€” yes, it's that simple
🏘️ Host a neighborhood book drive in your community
πŸ“¦ Donate books β€” especially ones with characters that look like our kids
πŸ’» Can't make the book drive - check out our Amzon Wish List and select a book...or two! https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1RJJICN5ZZR2X?ref_=wl_share

You don't have to do all of it. But pick ONE. Because one book, one volunteer, one afternoon of reading out loud can be the thing that changes a child's entire trajectory. 🌟

Our kids are counting on us. Let's show up for them. πŸ’›

πŸ‘‰πŸΎ Come see us tomorrow at our Book Drive with KWQC!

πŸ’ Thursday Thoughts | The Workforce Is Changing β€” Is Our Community Ready?

Honestly...the workforce looks nothing like it did ten years ago. Even five years ago. Industries are shifting, technology is moving fast, and the rules of employment are being rewritten in real time. And if we're not intentional about making sure our community has access to the tools, training, and opportunities needed to keep up β€” we will be left behind.

That's not a scare tactic. That's just the truth. And truth is what Thursday Thoughts is all about.

Here's what I know β€” skills gap and access gap are two different problems. Some people have the drive and the ability but never got the right opportunity. Some have the opportunity but need the upskilling to take full advantage of it. Both are real. Both are solvable. And both require a community that is intentional about showing up for its people. πŸ™πŸΎ

That's exactly what we're doing at TMBC Lincoln Resource Center Every. Single. Day.

Our Goodwill Career Center is on the ground floor of this work β€” connecting adults in our community with job assistance, certification programs, and the upskilling they need to level up. And we have exciting classes coming up in June that could be the turning point for someone who is ready to make their move. πŸ‘€

And then there's Hustle U β€” our program for high school juniors and seniors that is preparing the NEXT generation for the workforce before they even walk across that graduation stage. This is our first year and I'll be honest β€” we learned a lot along the way. πŸ˜„

But that's what year one is for. We built something, we watched it grow, we took notes, and next school year's cohort? They have no idea what's coming for them. πŸ”₯Because that's how you build something that lasts. You start. You learn. You get better. And you keep going.

The workforce pipeline starts with a community that believes in its people enough to prepare them. We believe that here. πŸ’ΌβœŠπŸΎ

πŸ’ Thursday Thoughts | Out of School Time Matters More Than You Think

Every year as the school year winds down, I find myself thinking about the same thing β€” what happens to our kids when the bell rings on that last day of school?

For some kids, summer means vacations, camps, and adventures. But for many kids in our community, summer can mean long unstructured days with little to do and nowhere purposeful to be. And here's what I know after years of doing this work β€” idle time for young people is a missed opportunity at best and a dangerous one at worst.

This is exactly why out of school time programming is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

At TMBC Lincoln Resource Center, we have a unique opportunity that most nonprofits don't have. We are not just providing a service β€” we are creating a culture. A culture where kids walk through our doors and feel like they belong somewhere. Where they are challenged, inspired and poured into every single day. Where they leave better than they came. πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

Enriching activities build more than skills β€” they build confidence. Leadership development doesn't just prepare kids for college and careers β€” it gives them a sense of purpose. And when you string those days together all summer long, you aren't just keeping kids busy β€” you are creating hope. And hope is everything. 🌟

As Executive Director of TMBC Lincoln Resource Center, I take that responsibility seriously every single day. Our kids deserve a summer that means something.

And that's exactly what Camp AMP is all about. πŸ•οΈ
