What a special day in Dalton! đź’™

We had the honor of hosting Lisa Marasco for a behind-the-scenes look at the rich history of the carpet industry right here in Dalton—which actually began with handmade bedspreads before growing into the carpet capital of the world. From those early tufted spreads to today’s large-scale manufacturing, it’s incredible to see how this community has evolved.

We toured the plant to learn how yarn (thread) is made—inside the very facility where the first official plant lactation room at Shaw Industries Group, Inc. was established in 2010 with the help of our coalition and WIC. At a time when workplace lactation support was becoming more normalized across the U.S., this plant was leading the way.

And the best part? ✨
Two of the moms featured in the womenshealth.gov videos still work there—and one came up to greet us! She shared:
“It was because of WIC and the Coalition that I was able to provide my milk for my now 15-year-old. I am forever grateful.”

Full circle, indeed. 🤍

History is being made every day. In honor of Black History Month, join us as we spotlight a few modern day Black Breastfeeding History Makers.
In 1987, Dr. Kimarie Bugg DNP, FNP - BC, MPH, IBCLC became the first African American International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in the United States, breaking barriers in the field of lactation. In 2011, Dr. Bugg went on to found Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE), a national non-profit dedicated to reducing breastfeeding disparities within the Black community.
For nearly four decades, Dr. Bugg has focused on improving breastfeeding access and outcomes in marginalized communities, training healthcare providers and community leaders, and advocating for racial and health equity in maternal and child care.

Babies use their hands when they eat, just like adults do! Their little hands help them find their way to the breast and latch comfortably. They massage the breast to stimulate milk flow. And touching the breast can help babies feel secure and remain calm so they can breastfeed effectively. (Frantic babies do not feed well!) Some parents worry about babies scratching their faces. Cut or file nails safely when they reach beyond the fingertips. This will prevent scratching.

So, take the mitts off and let your baby’s little hands help out!
