Camp Via West provides exceptional programming and a wide variety of activities for campers with disabilities and differing needs. We welcome your calls!

The Vision for Via: Two Women, One Mom and a 13-Year-Old Boy

Because school was not mandated for children with disabilities in the 1940’s, the single mother of a 13-year-old boy with cerebral palsy was forced to leave her son alone every day. She positioned his wheelchair by the window, placed his food on a nearby table and reluctantly left him there from early morning until she could return from

work in the evening. Frances Anderson and Faye Braely noticed the boy sitting in the window every day. When the two women approached the mother about taking her son on weekly excursions, she welcomed their help. Climbing two flights of narrow stairs, the women would first bring down the boy’s heavy wheelchair and then climb the stairs again, carrying the boy down in a “chair” they made with their arms. They took the boy on short field trips and city excursions, expanding his horizons. The two volunteers were soon helping five people with disabilities. Generous people, businesses and organizations donated transportation, a vacant house to use. With borrowed chairs and tables, the growing group of volunteers provided lunch, entertainment and day activities at their first facility. That act of generosity led to the creation of the Crippled Children’s Society, an organization that would become Via Services, a non-profit organization that continues to grow and serve families, children and adults with special needs and disabilities in Santa Clara County. 🌟 Miss Freya 🌟
This will be Freya’s 2nd summer at Camp Via West, yet not her first rodeo working at a camp! She’ll be crafting it up in the Aartvark as our Arts & Crafts Activity Lead. She brings a wealth of creativity, energy and good vibes 😎

Freya’s Advice to Staff/Campers:
Come in with an OPEN mind, don’t take yourself serious, it’s camp and it’s a fun place to be you will only have fun if you let yourself loose! This is about to be the most crazy and memorable 3 months of your life you’re going to grow so so much and I promise you by the end of this experience you will be a completely changed person, all for the better. And enjoy it while it lasts because the days are long but the summer is short !

A successful Heart of Camp ✨

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we raised over $220,000 to create life-changing experiences for children and adults with developmental disabilities!

Our very own campers were speakers! Thank you to Alejandro, Samay, and their families, who shared their stories and reminded us exactly why Camp Via West matters: the friendships we make, confidence we build, independence gained, and joy.

A huge thank you to Laura and Marc McGeever for their generous donation match, and to every sponsor, donor, volunteer, and attendee who made the night so special. We couldn’t do this without you! 💙
