From Rubble to Refuge: The Remarkable Story of Albany Shoreline

After we visited the Berkeley Waterfront Park this summer, we planned another day trip in the autumn to walk around Albany Shoreline Park, which is nestled along the edge of the San Francisco Bay. We were amazed by some of the most dramatic views in the East Bay. Reading the park info and looking closely at the ground beneath our feet, we realized this isn’t a typical manicured green space....

Anticipating Caltrain ridership growth, the City of Sunnyvale is improving bike-pedestrian access around the Sunnyvale Caltrain Station. A survey of the public indicated that 38% of respondents would walk or bike to the Station more instead of drive if safety improvements were made. At the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) meeting this month, staff unveiled concept plans of these improvements. There were many street and intersection improvements proposed. Some of these proposals truly improve safety while some don’t, and some areas should but did not get addressed.

On November 14 in 1960, Ruby Bridges made history when she became the first African American student integrating a White school, William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Every year, school children around the country celebrate this historic day by walking to school.

Here in Cupertino, a group of motivated Eaton Elementary parents organized a local Walk to School Day with rally points, flags and goodie bags for the kids. Thanks go to AAA Insurance through the Ruby Bridges Foundation, for providing the materials to make this day more fun for our students!

The City of Cupertino is currently working on developing our next Active Transportation Plan (ATP) which will guide the city’s pedestrian and cycling projects, policy, and investments for the next ten years. This is a big deal.

After many months of community meetings, traffic analyses, and review of existing city and regional transportation plans, the city has identified a list of potential pedestrian and bicycle projects – and proposed a set of criteria for ranking them in order of priority.

The Cupertino Bicycle Pedestrian Commission recently provided input to Cupertino City Staff on safety concerns associated with the Torre Avenue pedestrian crossing area, located at Town Center Lane in front of the Civic Center Plaza.

This area includes the highly utilized library, City Hall, Community Hall, businesses such as Coffee Society and townhouse homes. Torre Avenue experiences a high volume of vehicular traffic and also a high volume of pedestrian/bicycle activity that includes seniors, students, young children and families.

Recently, there have been some critics speaking out against Class IV bike lanes, claiming that they are not safe for cyclists, they cause more accidents than roads without them, they cause a slower emergency response, and are part of an “anti-vehicle agenda” as Republican Mayor and County Supervisor candidate John Franklin in Vista, CA puts it. Surprisingly, these critics have even included one cycling group. I decided to take a deep dive to look at their concerns and see whether the evidence shows their claims are valid. Below are the claims, and the evidence about whether they are true or not.

Starbird Chicken is located on the corner of Blaney and Stevens Creek Boulevard at 20080 Stevens Creek Blvd Suite 100, and is a relatively new business for Cupertino. They are known for their delicious chicken and salads (our board recommends the Elote Chicken Salad!).

The new protected bike lanes on Stevens Creek Boulevard between DeAnza and Wolfe are coming soon, as construction is beginning now which will make this destination even better to bike to very soon.

There’s a lot of friendly socializing to be had by coming to a DOLA here in Cupertino! Catch the video below of a recent event of the Linda Vista Little & Delicate dog DOLA potluck for families and their dogs. Everyone had a great time, with the dogs enjoying seeing their friends (both human and pup) while behaving well.

It’s a lane, it’s a trail, it’s a path—it’s the Lawson Bikeway! The Lawson Bikeway, completed in Summer 2025 after seven years of planning, is Cupertino’s first two-way protected bikeway. Funded by a $120,000 Apple grant, it separates cars, biking students, and walking students to improve safety for all students while also easing traffic, reducing air pollution, and enhancing the neighborhood for all residents. It’s a model for innovation in school safety infrastructure.

Brightly-colored whimsical objects and animals are popping up around Cupertino! A 15-ft orange and yellow shark is sunning itself in Memorial Park, a 12-ft blue and orange salmon has appeared at Wilson Park, a bright yellow wagon wheel rolled in at McClellan Ranch, two interlocking blue and green chat bubbles have shown up next to the Library Field at City Center and two more fun designs are on the way. Have you seen them all?
