Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance

Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance SCVBA brings together people who care about birds for education, outreach, and advocacy work in SCC.

SCVAS is one of the largest, most active, and respected of the 500+ chapters of the National Audubon Society. We are an independent chapter with our own membership, budget, and programs. By becoming a supporting member of our chapter, you are helping our local conservation efforts, youth environmental education programs (many of the them for disadvantaged public schools), and citizen science effor

ts. All of our programs and efforts are supported by our generous membership. All donations to us are tax-deductible since we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

During a public meeting on May 28, the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority Board of Directors voted unanimously to oppose the proposed AES Jewelflower Battery Energy Storage System.

If approved, the project would place hundreds of containerized lithium‑ion battery units across roughly 40 acres of prime farmland in North Coyote Valley.

We need to act now to protect the Santa Clara Valley from wildfires, safeguard clean drinking water, and protect disappearing natural areas before they’re gone forever.

Join us in voting YES on Measure D to protect our region against droughts, flooding, wildfires, and other extreme weather events. 🔥💧🌿

We're big fans of coexisting with nature. That's why we're celebrating innovation with the Second Annual Youth Bird Friendly Cities Contest! Join us online this Friday as we share conservation and advocacy stories from both sides of the Pacific, talk public education with students already putting in the work to introduce people to birds, and share some of the contest projects that we're putting together! Contest submissions are due by April 30th, so there is still time for your K-12 student to take part!

Mountain View Burrowing Owls need your help!
On Tuesday, April 14, the Mountain View City Council will (hopefully) approve additional funding to monitor the Burrowing Owl population at Shoreline Park and to restart banding of owlets. This item is on the consent agenda, meaning it will be approved along with other items and typically without discussion.
The burrowing owl population at Shoreline has crashed since the City’s biologist left in summer 2024, declining from 11 breeding pairs to just one. Over the past two years, consulting biologists have focused on avoiding harm to owls during projects and maintenance, as required by law. Some management actions have continued (such as limited mowing), but key recovery efforts have not: artificial burrows have not been maintained, predator management appears to have stopped, and programs like supplemental feeding are no longer being implemented.

Our advocacy team plans to attend and speak. If you’re able, please tell the Council (in your own words) that:

You care about Mountain View’s burrowing owls and biodiversity
You support investing in monitoring and recovery, consistent with the City’s 2012 Burrowing Owl Preservation Plan
Urgent action is needed now, or Mountain View risks losing its burrowing owl population
This includes hiring a qualified biologist as soon as possible to steward the owls at Shoreline and implement recovery measures

You can join in person (We’ll be there around 7:30 PM) or online at: https://mountainview.zoom.us/j/84351267142
