RI State Representative Mia Ackerman invited the CSV Board of Directors to join her at Poppy’s for breakfast today and she presented us with a very generous grant! Thank you, Representative Ackerman, for your 25 years of volunteer efforts in our schools and for supporting our Reading Is Fundamental program with a RI House Legislative grant!

CSV Board of Directors is also very grateful for a RI Senate Legislative Grant sponsored by Senator Ryan Pearson and Senator Brian Thompson. It means so much to Cumberland School Volunteers to have the RI legislative support of our programs.

Cumberland School Volunteers would like to thank the students and families who so generously donated books in May during the READ!SHARE!REPEAT! campaign to collect “like-new” books. We collected 1,000 books! They are still being sorted and catalogued, but some have already made their way into the hands of students at Community School.

CSV had our last Reading Is Fundamental event of the year today. We celebrated the end of the school year by giving away almost 550 books, bookmarks and stickers to the K-5 students at Community. The kids were very excited to see the variety of books on display, made possible by the variety of donated books!

Many thanks to volunteers Diane Grenon, Harshi Makecha, Mary Lynne Miller and Katrina Blancaflor for their tremendous help. And thanks to Principal Cheryl Vaughn and Administrative Assistant Christine Skawinski for organizing the teachers. The whole day ran really smoothly!

It is with great pleasure that the Cumberland School Volunteers announces that the recipient of our 2026 Community Service Award is EMILY RAIMONDI!

This award is given to a CHS senior who best exemplifies the spirit of meaningful community involvement, believing that any definition of a successful life must include serving others.

In the last 4 years, Emily logged over 380 community service hours through the platform T.R.E.A.T.S. which stands for “Travis Roy Empowering All Through Service” and honors her late friend, Travis Roy. She organized “Treats For Troops”, collected supplies for the Providence Animal Shelter and toys for families in need during the holidays through the Northern Rhode Island Food Bank.

Congratulations to Emily and her fellow CHS graduates as they embark on the next chapters of their lives. CSV is proud of all of you.

Congratulations to Emily Raimondi, the recipient of 2026 CSV Community Service Award!

Cumberland School Volunteers celebrated reading week at BFNorton on May 21st with our final Reading Is Fundamental event at the school. We had so much fun giving away almost 400 books and stickers and bookmarks during the day!!

We introduced Cumberland author, Muriel Holfelder, to our 4th and 5th graders and Ms Beland’s class got to meet RI State Representative Brandon Voas.

Several of our RIF volunteers were mystery readers in the classrooms and all of us had a great time with the students and staff. Thank you to Principal Sandy Lariviere and Administrative Assistant Laurie Kissik for helping the day run so smoothly.

Cumberland School Volunteers is piloting an initiative for the month of May and we're calling it "READ! SHARE! REPEAT!"

THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN SIMPLY AMAZING IN THE FIRST 2 WEEKS!! Many, many thanks to the families who have made such generous donations. We have collected hundreds of books for future RIF events in your kid's schools. We'll be taking donations for 2 more weeks!

This is a creative way to sustain the RIF program, and it is a completely voluntary book donation drive. CSV is asking 3rd, 4th & 5th graders to look through their books at home and consider donating 1-2 "like-new" books back to the RIF program. They could be books that the students have "out-grown" or simply want to share with a younger reader by passing the books along.

The books will be carefully collected in bins which will be placed in each elementary school. They will be inventoried and then offered alongside new books at future RIF events next year.

We are grateful for the support from our school principals, and we look forward to seeing if this initiative takes off! READ! SHARE! REPEAT! READ! SHARE! REPEAT! READ! SHARE! REPEAT!

The Cumberland School Volunteers celebrated its supporters and its volunteers at the CSV Recognition Event 2026 at the Lodge at Diamond Hill on April 29, 2026. Guests included our elementary school principals, administrative assistants and teachers, several Reading Is Fundamental and Just Friends volunteers, PTO presidents and friends and family of the Board of Directors.

We celebrated the successes of the organization made possible by the time and talents of its volunteers and the support from multiple contributors. Director Cindy Thorsen was especially thankful for the stories shared by Community School teacher, Andi Friedland, and Cumberland Hill principal, Deb Malcolm, as they described how the Just Friends and Reading Is Fundamental programs have impacted their students.

Thank you to the dedicated volunteers of the Board of Directors for their support of the expansion of the RIF program and the enhancement of the Just Friends programs.

Cumberland School Volunteers is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a generous grant from the Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation for Reading Is Fundamental Program Expansion and Just Friends Enhancement.

The funding will help us purchase books for the last RIF events of the year; we will have distributed over 6800 new books to 2330 students from grades pre-K - 5 by the end of the school year. The resource boxes for the Just Friends program will be updated with new books and learning materials so we'll be ready in the fall to bring the program to Cumberland's 4th graders.

Thank you, Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation, for your community support of us!
