The Spiritual Inventory

Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

Matthew 7:9

The illustration of prayer Jesus uses here is of a good child asking for a good thing. We talk about prayer as if the state of our relationship to God makes no difference to whether he gives us what we want. Never say that it isn’t God’s will to give you what you ask; don’t throw your hands up in defeat. Take a spiritual inventory; find the reason. Ask yourself: Am I in the relationship of a good child asking for a good thing? Am I rightly related to my spouse, my children, my friends and colleagues? Or am I saying to God, “Oh, Lord, I know I’ve been irritable and angry, but I want a spiritual blessing”? If this is my mindset, I’ll have to do without the blessing until I adopt the attitude of the good child.

We mistake defiance for devotion, telling God that we want to be abandoned to him, when really we just want to abandon our responsibilities. We refuse to take a spiritual inventory. Have I been asking God to give me money for something I want when there’s something I haven’t paid for? Have I been asking God for liberty when I am withholding it from someone else? Is there someone I haven’t forgiven, someone to whom I haven’t been kind?

I’m a child of God only through spiritual rebirth. I’m good only as long as I walk in the light. Most of us turn prayer into a pious platitude, using it to get an emotional fix or viewing it as a hazy, mystical experience. Spiritually, we are all good at producing fogs. If we take an inventory, we will see very clearly what we must set right—a friendship, a debt, a temperament. There’s no point in praying unless we are living as children of God. Once we are, then, Jesus says,

“Everyone who asks receives” (Matthew 7:8).

He Will Fight for You

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14

Exodus 14:10-18

Boxer Jim Braddock didn't fight for wealth and fame, but to put food on his family's table. The movie The Wrestler tells the story of how he went from a washed-up boxer to a world heavyweight champion. While facing extreme poverty during the Great Depression, Jim sacrificed his own resources, his health, and his pride to provide for his children. He was never intimidated by an opponent and bravely endured the blows in the ring to keep his family safe.

Jim's legacy is the passionate defense of his family. We, too, have a passionate advocate who has promised to take our place in the ring. When the Israelites faced Pharaoh's army after escaping from Egypt, they were terrified and cried out to God. But Moses responded in faith:

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still” (v. 14).

And without any action on their part, their enemies were literally swept away by the sea, as God supernaturally ended the battle before it even began.

Sometimes, it seems we face life’s trials or the arrows of the enemy, Satan, alone (see Psalm 91:5). But God is with us (Deuteronomy 31:6), and He fights for us; we simply need to be still.

Reflect and pray

What battle are you tempted to fight alone? What does it mean to “be still” while trusting that God will fight for you?

Jesus, I trust in You as You fight for me.

There are lions, but their teeth are broken; there are serpents, but their fangs are extracted; there are rivers, but they are bridged or fordable; there are flames, but we wear that matchless garment which renders us invulnerable to fire. The sword that has been forged against us is already blunted; the instruments of war which the enemy is preparing have already lost their point. God has taken away in the person of Christ all the power that anything can have to hurt us. Auténtico Hijo de Dios

Despreciado y desechado entre los hombres… Isaías 53:3

Isaías 53:1-7

Un concurso de fotografía evaluaba imágenes creadas con inteligencia artificial (IA). Solo se permitían imágenes generadas por ese medio. Una de las ganadoras fue una representación surrealista: algo que parecía un flamenco rosa enroscado como una bola de plumas, sobre un paisaje arenoso.

Solo había un problema: la imagen era una fotografía real de un flamenco real. El fotógrafo había presentado una foto auténtica en un concurso de inteligencia artificial. Su foto, «Flamingone», quedó descalificada. Así es: la foto auténtica fue rechazada por ser de verdad.

El profeta Isaías predice vívidamente una ironía similar sobre el juicio y la crucifixión de Jesucristo:

«como cordero fue llevado al matadero» (Isaías 53:7).

Cristo fue llevado a juicio por afirmar ser el Mesías. Sin embargo, no ofreció ninguna defensa:

«Angustiado él, y afligido, no abrió su boca» (v. 7).

Isaías señala la última contradicción:

«Despreciado y desechado entre los hombres» (v. 3).

Así es: el auténtico Mesías, el verdadero Hijo de Dios, fue rechazado como si fuera falso.

Hoy, tú y yo somos jueces en ese tribunal de decisión. ¿Aceptamos a Jesús como el auténtico Hijo de Dios? ¿O lo rechazamos como algo inferior? Aunque creamos en Él, ¿lo rechazamos a veces en nuestra vida cotidiana?

Prayer Choice and Prayer Conflict
When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father . . . who sees what is done in secret. — Matthew 6:6

Jesus didn’t say, “Daydream about your Father.” He said, “Pray to your Father.” Prayer is an effort of will. The most difficult thing to do after we’ve gone into our room and shut the door is to actually pray. We struggle to get our minds into working order; we struggle to rein in our wandering thoughts. The great battle in private prayer is overcoming this indulgence in aimless daydreaming. We have to discipline our minds and learn to concentrate on willful prayer.

We take care to select a specific place for prayer, but when we get there the plague of flies begins. Thoughts about all the things we have to do go buzzing through our minds. “Close the door,” Jesus says. To enter a secret silence is to deliberately shut the door on emotions and anxieties and open the door to God. God sees us in the secret place. He does not see us as other people see us, nor as we see ourselves. When we live in the secret place, it becomes impossible for us to doubt him. We become more certain of him than of anything else.

Your Father, Jesus says, is unseen; he “sees what is done in secret.” You can enter the secret place no matter where you are. Even in the hustle and bustle of daily life, you will always find God. Get into the habit of going to him about everything and learn to start every day in his presence. Unless you fling the door to your mind wide and let God enter in your first waking moment, you will work on a wrong level all day long. But if at first light, you swing the door open and pray to your Father in secret, everything you do in public for the rest of the day will be stamped with his presence.

Elección y conflicto en la oración

Cuando ores, entra en tu habitación, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre… que ve lo que se hace en secreto. — Mateo 6:6

Jesús no dijo: «Sueña despierto con tu Padre». Dijo: «Ora a tu Padre». La oración es un esfuerzo de voluntad. Lo más difícil después de entrar en nuestra habitación y cerrar la puerta es orar. Nos cuesta concentrarnos; nos cuesta controlar nuestros pensamientos errantes. La gran batalla en la oración privada es vencer esta indulgencia en la ensoñación sin rumbo. Tenemos que disciplinar nuestra mente y aprender a concentrarnos en la oración consciente.

Nos esforzamos por elegir un lugar específico para orar, pero al llegar, comienza la plaga de moscas. Los pensamientos sobre todas las cosas que tenemos que hacer zumban en nuestra mente. «Cierren la puerta», dice Jesús. Entrar en un silencio secreto es cerrar deliberadamente la puerta a las emociones y ansiedades y abrir la puerta a Dios. Dios nos ve en el lugar secreto. "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith."

Beyond measure it is desirable that we, as believers, should have the person of Jesus constantly before us, to inflame our love towards him, and to increase our knowledge of him. I would to God that my readers were all entered as diligent scholars in Jesus' college, students of Corpus Christi, or the body of Christ, resolved to attain unto a good degree in the learning of the cross. But to have Jesus ever near, the heart must be full of him, welling up with his love, even to overrunning; hence the apostle prays "that Christ may dwell in your hearts." See how near he would have Jesus to be! You cannot get a subject closer to you than to have it in the heart itself. "That he may dwell;" not that he may call upon you sometimes, as a casual visitor enters into a house and tarries for a night, but that he may dwell; that Jesus may become the Lord and Tenant of your inmost being, never more to go out.
Observe the words--that he may dwell in your heart, that best room of the house of manhood; not in your thoughts alone, but in your affections; not merely in the mind's meditations, but in the heart's emotions. We should pant after love to Christ of a most abiding character, not a love that flames up and then dies out into the darkness of a few embers, but a constant flame, fed by sacred fuel, like the fire upon the altar which never went out. This cannot be accomplished except by faith. Faith must be strong, or love will not be fervent; the root of the flower must be healthy, or we cannot expect the bloom to be sweet. Faith is the lily's root, and love is the lily's bloom. Now, reader, Jesus cannot be in your heart's love except you have a firm hold of him by your heart's faith; and, therefore, pray that you may always trust Christ in order that you may always love him. If love be cold, be sure that faith is drooping.

Portrait of a Marriage

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other…

Ephesians 4:26-32

Of all the U.S. presidents, Jimmy Carter had the longest marriage: 77 years. When asked the secret to his long and successful marriage, he replied, “Choosing the right person to marry.” He also mentioned three other concepts for marital success: reconciliation, communication, and devotion to the faith.

We see the idea of reconciliation in

Ephesians 4:26: “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.”

The Carters took this to heart. “Every night we try to make up completely from the arguments of the day,” Jimmy once said. We can also see there the secret of communication that pleases Christ. Paul wrote:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (v. 32).

God ordained marriage as something good, established by Him (Genesis 2:24; Hebrews 13:4). Proverbs 18:22 says it is a divine blessing: “He who finds a wife finds a good thing.” And the way we treat one another, in marriage and throughout the body of Christ, can encourage and positively impact others. Whether single or married, our words and actions can reflect the loving and forgiving heart of Christ.

How can God help you reflect Christ in your interpersonal relationships? What does it mean to be compassionate and forgiving today?

Dios ordenó el matrimonio como algo bueno, establecido por Él (Génesis 2:24; Hebreos 13:4). Proverbios 18:22 dice que es una bendición divina: «El que halla esposa halla el bien». Y la forma en que nos tratamos unos a otros, en el matrimonio y en todo el cuerpo de Cristo, puede animar e impactar positivamente a los demás. Seamos solteros o casados, nuestras palabras y acciones pueden reflejar el corazón amoroso y perdonador de Cristo.
