Most people in student loan default think the tax refund pause means they're safe to file and collect. They're not.
Here's what's actually happening:

✦ The pause on Treasury offsets is temporary and policy-driven - it can end without much notice
✦ Default status doesn't disappear while the pause is active
✦ The IRS still processes your return normally — only the intercept is paused
✦ If you're married filing jointly, your spouse's refund can still be at risk depending on your state
