On April 19, 1775, the British burned Concord's liberty pole, and Concord's own flag went up in flames with it. The flag that survived the day came from our neighbors: the Bedford Minutemen carried the Bedford Flag into Concord, and it has endured ever since as a symbol of that morning.

In this short video from the University of Dallas, history professor Mark Petersen explains how its armored arm, sword, and Latin motto "Vince aut Morire" ("Conquer or Die") blend English, European, and Massachusetts traditions to show who those first patriots were.

Now it's time for Concord to raise a liberty flag of its own. The Concord Liberty Flag Contest invites students in high school and younger to design a flag that captures what liberty means to Concord today.

📅 Entries due: November 6, 20026
