Thanks to the Stevens County Windermere offices for their help! Epic Day of Service this year was focused on helping the Colville Valley Animal Sanctuary with several outdoor improvements to their grounds. With help from numerous community volunteers, Colville Rotarians built a set of steps along a path, installed some chain link fencing, addressed some drainage issues around the main building, and pulled a lot of weeds. Thanks to all for the help! Our Colville community again shows that it is truly Epic!

This week's speakers (Thursday, but I got behind) were Katie Heck and Curtis Vaagan of Vaagan Brothers Lumber ( https://vaagenbros.com/sustainability/ ) to talk about salvage logging and the impact of wildfires on the local logging industry. Over the past several years, contracts with the Forest Service to take damaged trees out of fire areas have increased dramatically; salvage logging not only allows the use of those logs but helps prevent the pile-up of down timber that could make the next fire in the area even hotter.

An important aspect of the Vaagen Approach toward sustainable forestry is optimal resource utilization. Our goal is to make the best use of as much of the harvested log as possible. For example, bark, chipped logs, and wood fiber are processed and utilized in the paper and landscaping industries. Ou...

An update on the Epic Day of Service projects at Colville Valley Animal Sanctuary: after considering the weather forecast CVAS and Rotary have decided to postpone Epic Day for one week. Setting aluminum fence posts and rebar stakes in a thunderstorm just seems unwise!

Our plan is to just move everything one week to June 5-6. Please still RSVP through the website or to Dave Bales so we know how much lunch to bring!

Click on Find a Project, then in the search box for "Club" enter "Colville" or "99114"; the "Project at Colville Valley Animal Sanctuary" will pop up in results. Click on that for more information on how to volunteer or donate funds toward material costs.

Our guest speaker this week was Gregg Deponte of Ola Aina Farm (https://www.olaainafarms.com/ ) to chat about some of the complications of being a small farmer in the current economic climate. He touched on choosing and establishing the correct forage for the field, and the livestock for the forage, and some of the difficulties for custom meat producers like regulatory limitations on selling individual cuts vs. whole carcass. We are looking forward to his next visit to discuss composting and soil amendment!
