We are based in the restored 1873 home of humorist, cartoonist, author, playwright, and journalist James Thurber, widely considered one of the foremost American humorists of the 20th century. Thurber House programs include The Thurber Prize for American Humor, author events featuring nationally bestselling authors and local authors, writing workshops for children and adults, writer residencies, and more.

Very exciting news today! 🎉🎉🎉 Thurber House is pleased to announce the return of the John E. Nance Writer-in-Residence Program and our 2026 Nance residents!

📚 2026 Nance Established Writer-in-Residence: LIZA MONROY 📚
Liza was the inaugural John E. Nance Writer-in-Residence at Thurber House in 2012 and is thrilled to return. Liza’s books include the novels The Distractions and Mexican High, the memoir The Marriage Act: The Risk I Took To Keep My Best Friend In America And What It Taught Us About Love, and Seeing As Your Shoes Are Soon To Be On Fire. During Liza’s residency in November 2026, she will lead a writing workshop on personal essay/memoir.

📚 2026 Nance Emerging Writer-in-Residence: CLAUDIA OWUSU 📚
Claudia Owusu is a Ghana girl through and through. As a writer and filmmaker, her work divulges the nuance of Black girlhood through a personal and collective lens. The John E. Nance Writer-in-Residence Program at Thurber House is a full-circle moment for Claudia, who grew up attending Thurber House workshops as a child. During her residency in February 2027, she will work with high school students in the Thurber House Young Writers’ Studio program.

Congratulations to these enormously talented writers! 🌟

Do you know a teen who loves D&D or who's never played but wants to learn? ✨ We're launching a D&D-style roleplaying club once a month at Thurber House, starting October 10!

Participants will take on the roles of imaginary characters in an adventure under the direction of a Game Master. 🧙 All of our games are 100% beginner friendly, and we'll teach you to play as we go. Games are limited to 6 people, so get signed up soon! 🧩✏️

Do you stay up too late watching horror movies? Are you always in the horror section of the library? 📚🦇

Join us SATURDAY, October 3rd, as we wander into the dark and twisty alleyways of horror writing and learn how to get your ideas from the depths of your brain 🧠 and onto paper. 👻

The workshop is open to 9th-12th graders. We’ll supply all of the materials, plus a snack! You’ll learn the ins and outs of creating realistic stories that will give everyone chills, and you’ll gain ideas for how to get them published, too.
