Will we see you at the Wexner Center for the Arts tomorrow night?

Acclaimed cartoonist John Derf Backderf discusses his new book about a little-known but volatile period in American history and the political cartoonists who stood up to power.

Award-winning cartoonist John “Derf” Backderf returns to the Wex Wednesday, September 23 to share a first look at his brand new book.

“The Dissidents: Autocrats! Vigilantes!
Communists!... And Cartoonists!” chronicles racism, violence, and political turmoil in early 20th-century America. It captures a momentous but often overlooked period in our history while making connections to current events that unfortunately echo those of the past.

Roxanne Gay calls it “...painfully timely and absolutely necessary. The stunning artwork only reinforces this graphic novel’s powerful message-there is nothing more precious and threatening than freedom.”

Backderf will sign copies of his book following the 7 PM talk. Books will be available for purchase in the The Wexner Center Store. Tickets in our stories- free for students.

Can you believe it’s already been a week since all this fun was had during the NCS Reuben Awards & Conference in Columbus? 🥹

We were so happy to welcome National Cartoonists Society National Cartoonists Society members to Columbus and be part of such a special week celebrating cartoonists and the comics community.

From sponsoring the conference tote bags to hosting an amazing afterparty with SEVENTH SON BREWING CO. and our friends at White Castle — who kept everyone well fed and even helped us get our CXC posters and postcards into the world — it was a week to remember.

And of course, we had a great time hanging out at the Cartoonist Showcase hosted by the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Scholastic!

Thanks to everyone who made Columbus such a great place to gather, celebrate, and have a little fun. We loved having you here! ✨

Our friends at the Laughing Ogre are opening today to make sure you can get your weekly comics! They are the best!

(Mass storms & tornadoes downed trees and wiped out power to huge swaths of Columbus yesterday.)
