Highland Youth Garden

The mission of Highland Youth Garden is to grow minds, grow food and grow communitiy in partnership with our Hilltop neighbors.

The garden’s history is one rooted in humility and love: the seeds for Highland Youth Garden were planted in 2009 when a local recreation center closed, and local educators and lovers-of-gardening began growing food and teaching children on the plot. Now, we feature one of the largest high tunnels in the city, an outdoor education center, and a nearly half-acre plot full of arbors, structures, and crops.

Ending the week with some BIG smiles and even BIGGER beets!

This week at Garden Club, our young gardeners harvested some giant beets! Many of them helped plant these back in the spring, making it extra special to finally pull them from the soil and see just how much they’ve grown.

Happy Friday from all of us at Highland Youth Garden!

School is back, and that means our garden is back to learning!

This week, we welcomed a class from our school across the street into the garden. Students got their hands in the soil and helped us plant watermelon radishes for our fall garden.

We love partnering with our neighboring school to give students the chance to learn, explore, and be part of what’s growing right here in their community.

We’re looking forward to more classes in the garden this fall! 🍂

Honoring the Highland Garden Club 🌹🌹🌹

We are so grateful to the members of the Highland Garden Club, a group of Hilltop gardeners who came together for generations to share their love of gardening, nature, and community.

Founded in 1938, the club brought neighbors together to learn from one another, visit gardens, share flowers, enjoy outings, and simply celebrate the joy of growing. As their membership grew smaller over the years, they made the incredibly generous decision to donate their remaining club funds to Highland Youth Garden.

We are honored to receive this gift and, even more so, to carry forward a small part of the gardening legacy they built here in the Hilltop. Their kindness will help create new opportunities for young gardeners to learn, grow, and find their own joy in nature. 🌻

Thank you, Highland Garden Club, for thinking of the gardeners who would come after you. Your legacy will continue to grow. 💚

“May all your weeds be wildflowers.” — Cheryl Lind, President of the Highland Garden Club

September Community Dinner at HYG!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our September Community Dinner! It was wonderful to share a meal, spend time together, and welcome community members back to the garden.

We were especially happy to see some of our Green Teens from this summer stop by to visit! They got to see how much the garden has grown since the summer and check out some of our fall crops. It was so much fun having them back at HYG! 💚

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this dinner possible—from our staff and to everyone who contributed their time, food, and energy. Events like this are made special by the people who continue to show up for our community.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again at our next Community Dinner on October 7th!
