Dismal Niche

Dismal Niche Columbia Experimental Music Programming
Community arts nonprofit Est. 2013 Columbia and Chicago. Our programming welcomes artists from across the U.S.

Founded in 2013 in Columbia, Dismal Niche began as a DIY, artist-operated record label and community arts network committed to promoting and archiving the expression of the more independent, esoteric and experimental accents of the local and regional music and arts community. Since incorporating as a non-profit in 2015, the activities of the organization have largely revolved around the programmin

g of the annual Columbia Experimental Music Festival and intermittent seasonal concerts. and from around the world to Columbia offering local residents rare opportunities to experience world class presentations of innovative and non-conventional music, art and performances that would likely otherwise not occur in Columbia. Through our programming we aim to facilitate immersive, interactive experiences that are both cognitively and viscerally challenging while also restorative and conducive to the non-didactic freedom of subjective interpretation and enjoyment. We believe that community experiences with adventurous music and art can help stimulate critical and creative thought not only about the ways in which music and art can be seen, heard, felt or performed, but also the ways in which public spaces can be used, transformed or subverted and social relationships expanded and re-imagined.

7pm doors / 8pm show
$20 (student and monthly supporter pricing available)
It may feel at times, and for good reason, like we are surrounded on all sides by a dark host of orcs, trolls and traitors, but we can hear the horns of the riders in the distance making their way to crash the fields of the Midwest with just intonation and hypnotic polyrhythms to give us strength and hope for the season ahead!

Tyondai Braxton
Friday, Nov. 13th at Crow Hall (1101 University Ave)
w/ the Mizzou Creative Improvisation Collective
Tyondai Braxton’s new album Splayed Werks, just released on Erased Tapes Erased Tapes is hands down one of the best electronic albums of the year! After decades in the experimental music game that have seen him play the role of idiosyncratic, pitch-shifted vocalist for avant-rock group Battles, composer of large-scale orchestral and symphonic works with legendary collaborators like Philip Glass, to Princeton University professor, Splayed Werks is a culminating display of his work over the last 20 years. Blending club-ready beats with chopped and spliced field recordings and moments of immersive ambient electronics, Braxton showcases his immaculate mastery of sound design.

We can’t wait to experience it all live in November! Seating is limited and we’d recommend buying in advance! Single show tickets and full weekend passes to the Extended Play Festival are on sale now!
