Happy National Opossum Appreciation Day!
With their little pink noses, curious eyes and 50 tiny teeth, opossums might not be everyone’s idea of adorable. But these gentle, misunderstood creatures deserve so much more appreciation than they receive.
Opossums are North America’s only native marsupials. They’re also nature’s little cleanup crew, helping our ecosystems by eating insects, scavenging carrion and cleaning up fallen fruit.
Despite their reputation, opossums are generally shy, nonaggressive animals. When frightened, they may hiss, show their teeth or involuntarily “play dead” as a last resort. They’re simply trying to survive in a world that often misunderstands them.
Sadly, these sweet little creatures are frequently feared, mistreated, and overlooked simply because of how they look.
At Jenny’s Wildlife Wonderland, we have the privilege of seeing the beauty in animals that others might never give a second glance. Every little life that comes through our doors reminds us why compassion, education, and coexistence matter so much.
So the next time you see an opossum, we hope you’ll look a little closer, judge a little less, and remember that every creature has a place and a purpose in this world.
Sometimes the most beautiful things are the ones we have to learn to see differently.
