We are gutted by the loss of our fellow Rotarian and good friend, Dr. Melvin Platt.

Always a gentleman, a true leader and Rotary mentor to many, Melvin's dedication to Rotary and our District goes back many years. Melvin, a retired University Professor at the University of Missouri, joined the Rotary Club of Columbia in February 1992. That is over 33 years of service.

In District 6080, he held the roles of:
District International Service Chair (2022-current)

Council on Legislation Representative (2020-current)

District Annual Fund Subcommittee Chair (2019-2020)

District Rotary Peace Fellowships Subcommittee Chair (2015-2016, 2018-2021)

Council on Legislation Representative-Alternate (2017-2020)

District Governor (DG) (2017-2018)

District Scholarship Subcommittee Chair (2004-2007, 2008-2010, 2011-2016)

In our club, Melvin served in the roles of:

Club Membership Chair (2020-2022)

Club President (2012-2013)

Member (1992 - Present)

Melvin held the levels of Benefactor, Bequest Society, Every Rotarian Every Year, Sustaining Member, Major Donor and the Paul Harris Society. He was also awarded the Meritorious Service award and Rotarian of the Year.

Melvin leaves a legacy of service and giving to our organization. His involvement touched many, and he will be truly missed. We are forever grateful for Melvin's influence and commitment.

We are deeply saddened to share that Dr. Melvin Platt, former Chair (1991–2000) and Director (2000–2008) of the Mizzou School of Music, passed away on Friday. Dr. Platt’s leadership and dedication left a lasting legacy — most notably guiding the Department of Music’s transition to the School of Music in 2000 and establishing the Melvin Platt Music Scholarship, awarded annually to top graduating seniors. His passion for Mizzou and commitment to excellence continue to inspire our community. A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m. at Missouri United Methodist Church.
