Happy Earth Day!

PS The benefits of breastfeeding, environmentally and for parent and child, extend well beyond the first six months!

[Image: Distant canopy of trees with sunlight poking through. Text: Happy Earth Day. Human milk is a uniquely sustainable, naturally renewable resource, produced with minimal environmental impact, while providing perfectly balanced, complete nutrition for infants throughout their first six months of life.]

Who knew that breastfeeding positively impacts age of puberty? This 2026 analysis of growth data into adolescence from 613 children found that β‰₯3 months of exclusive breastfeeding delays puberty onset. Too-early puberty is linked later in life to insulin resistance, high blood pressure and BMI, and cardiac problems. In their updated Model Maternity Policy (Clinical Protocol #7), ABM makes it clear that hospitals should:

~ Use all Ten Steps together, not pick and choose
~ Regularly review their practices, both internally and externally, to make sure the steps are actually happening
~ Ensure ALL staff who care for mothers and babies are properly trained and competent in supporting *breastfeeding*

ABM also reminds us that the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative WORKS because all of the steps work together… its effectiveness comes from implementing the FULL model, not pieces of it.

Seeing the Ten Steps clearly named in such an important clinical protocol is such a BIG deal. It reinforces what the evidence has shown for years and supports facilities that are committed to turning research into real-life, everyday care!!
