The City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility will implement a new summer schedule allowing collection crews to finish prior to the peak of the afternoon heat, reducing the risk of heat-related injury or illness. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, recycle and trash should be placed curbside no later than 6:30 a.m. on the designated collection day. Residents may place materials at the curb as early as 4 p.m. the day prior to collection.

From the City of Columbia:

The City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility continues to experience severe collection staff shortages. Early on the evening of July 19, the staffing agency that has been providing temporary employees informed the City they would no longer be able to provide that service. The City is exploring other avenues to obtain temporary staff necessary to maintain collection practices.

For health and safety reasons, ensuring the collection of trash will require the City of Columbia Solid Waste Utility to concentrate first on curbside trash collection and secondly on curbside recycling collection.

To assure curbside collection of trash and recycling occurs, the Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, July 21 has been canceled in an effort to accommodate collection needs for curbside customers. Friday customers should place both trash and recycling curbside as normal. In the event that curbside recycling is not collected on Friday, July 20, residents should leave material at the curb and it will be picked up on Saturday, July 21. Please secure recycling materials so they do not blow or scatter around the neighborhood.

It is possible the staffing shortage could continue into the next week. Residents should continue to place all trash and recycling at the curb on their scheduled collection day. In the event that recycling is not collected, residents should leave material at the curb where it will be collected later in the week or on Saturday.

Customers signed up to receive updates from our COMO Recycle and Trash app will be notified directly of service changes. Available for Apple and Android.

Public Hearing Reopens Discussion on Transmission Line Routes

A public hearing will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, 7 p.m. at City Hall. At the hearing, the City Council will reopen discussion on route selection for transmission lines in the southern part of Columbia.

After the City Council approved the Option A route in 2013, work started on those locations for the new transmission poles. Some area residents recently raised concerns about the route. The City Council decided to reconsider the previously reviewed routes, Option A, B and B-2. Work on Option A has now stopped.

Please make every effort to attend the public hearing. If you would like to express your opinion, contact your City Council representative.
