Today, we stopped at the Lee Highway memorial where the July 16, 2015 attack began.
The flag flying there had become badly weathered. This was not a ceremony, and it was not done for attention. It was simply a quiet act of honor.
Five service members gave their lives that day protecting others:
Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan
Staff Sgt. David Wyatt
Sgt. Carson Holmquist
Lance Cpl. Squire “Skip” Wells
Petty Officer Randall Smith
Memorials matter because memory matters. And sometimes remembrance looks like stopping, noticing, and doing what should be done.
To the Fallen Five, their families, the wounded, the first responders, and the Chattanooga community still marked by that day: we remember.
May the places that hold their memory always be treated with dignity, respect, and care.
Covering those who covered us.
