Today, we stopped at the Lee Highway memorial where the July 16, 2015 attack began.

The flag flying there had become badly weathered. This was not a ceremony, and it was not done for attention. It was simply a quiet act of honor.

Five service members gave their lives that day protecting others:

Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan
Staff Sgt. David Wyatt
Sgt. Carson Holmquist
Lance Cpl. Squire “Skip” Wells
Petty Officer Randall Smith

Memorials matter because memory matters. And sometimes remembrance looks like stopping, noticing, and doing what should be done.

To the Fallen Five, their families, the wounded, the first responders, and the Chattanooga community still marked by that day: we remember.

May the places that hold their memory always be treated with dignity, respect, and care.

Covering those who covered us.

REMEMBERGING THE FALLEN

This Memorial Day, I want to begin with a tribute that is deeply personal to me.

Daniel “Danny” Ledare Underwood was my great-uncle. He gave his life in Vietnam. I carry his name as my own—my middle name is a reminder of his sacrifice and his legacy.

A few years ago, while living in the Washington, D.C. area, my parents came to visit. I had the opportunity to take my father to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Together, we found Danny’s name etched into the wall.

My father wept as he touched his name.

They were only one year apart in age. They grew up together—not just as family, but as boys who played side by side. One came home. One did not.

That moment has never left me.

This is why Operation Watchcap exists.

Because behind every name is a story. A family. A life that mattered.

This Memorial Day, we invite you to honor someone who made the ultimate sacrifice. You can make a donation in their name and, if you choose, share their story so that it is never forgotten.

This Memorial Day, remembrance can be more than a moment; it can be an impact.

Operation Watchcap’s "Remember the Fallen" campaign invites you to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by supporting veterans today.

When you donate in memory of a loved one and share their story, your tribute is placed inside a handmade watch cap and given to a veteran, creating a meaningful connection between service and remembrance.

We invite you to sponsor a hat in their honor and help carry forward their legacy.

This Memorial Day, Operation Watchcap invites you to honor the fallen through a purposeful donation.

This campaign is dedicated to honoring the memory of those who gave their lives in service to our country, carrying forward their names, stories, and legacy so they are never forgotten.

You are invited to make your donation in honor of a loved one, friend, or fellow service member who made the ultimate sacrifice. You may share a tribute and photo about that individual. Your message will be thoughtfully included in a cap given to a veteran as a reminder of their service and the enduring impact of their sacrifice.

After making your donation, send your tribute to:

📧 [email protected]

📱 (423) 464-6598

With your permission, select tributes may also be shared publicly to honor these individuals and help others better understand the mission of Operation Watchcap.

Thank you for helping us remember and for helping us cover those who covered us.

Today, something quietly powerful happened inside a Covering Circle.

No headlines. No fanfare. Just hands, young and old, moving yarn, stitch by stitch, with purpose.

Together, this group created 138 watch caps in a single month for veterans.

Some of these hands are just beginning their journey in knitting and crochet. Others have decades of experience; hands that have stitched for children, families, and now, for those who have served our country.

One pair of hands belongs to a veteran herself. There’s something profound about that, a veteran helping care for other veterans, one stitch at a time.

Different generations. Different stories. One shared mission: To ensure no veteran goes without warmth. When you look at these hands, you’re seeing more than yarn; you’re seeing compassion, dedication, and love woven into every hat.

Every hat carries more than yarn. It carries time, care, and gratitude.

This is what community looks like. This is what service looks like.

If you’ve ever wanted to be part of something like this but don't knit or crochet, here’s a simple way:

🧶 Sponsor a Hat

A small donation provides the yarn needed for one handmade watch cap.

You may never meet the person who wears it. But they will feel the warmth you helped provide. ❤️🇺🇸

Moments that matter. 🇺🇸❤️

We received a donation from a returning supporter along with a simple note that meant everything: “Love you!!!”

No long explanation. No fanfare. Just kindness, encouragement, and belief in what we’re building.

At Operation Watchcap, every hat we send to a veteran is made possible by people like this; people who quietly show up, again and again.

To our repeat donors, our volunteers, and everyone who supports this mission: thank you for being part of something bigger than all of us.

You are felt, appreciated, and you are making a difference.

March Momentum

Stitched with purpose all March long 🧶

Every single hat was made with love, gratitude, and a prayer for the veteran who will receive it.

We’re getting closer…
1,000 is in sight.

If you're a donor, volunteer, prayed for us or just cheered us on from the sidelines; thank you for walking this journey with us.

Let's GO! 💪🇺🇸❤️

This is Mike.

A warrior who has carried more than most of us will ever fully understand.

We sent him a handmade watch cap… just a small way to say thank you.

His wife sent us this video.

Watching him open it, seeing him take his time, read the note, and quietly take it all in; this is why we do what we do.

Because it’s not about the hat.
It’s about being seen.
It’s about being remembered.
It’s about knowing your service still matters.

Mike, we see you. And we are so incredibly grateful.
