When crisis’ occur and people are reeling from the shock of sudden bad news like the loss of Paul Steele it it hard to find joy, or anything that would bring a smile, or a thought of gratitude.

I was witness to an amazing outpouring of support from the Chattanooga area recovery community as local leaders from nonprofits, 12 step members (AA, NA, CR, RA, and Alanon), treatment facilities, and connected individuals stepped up to provide meals and offer free services to those affected. Group sessions, Individual counseling, personal peer support, and more. There has really been no lack of coverage.

I am proud to be a part of this loving, caring community of people. Thank you all for all you do. You all know who you are, and I commend you for your heart for those who suffer.

To those still suffering: many of you have remained quiet and withdrawn, while you process feelings, but the moment isn’t over, and as you begin to emerge from the shock, help is still available. You saw or heard who showed up, they/we are still reachable when you need us. Just reach out.

We love you. We are here for you.

Addiction, a disease conjured in the depths of hell, creates situations and events that leave those touched by it, stunned, heartbroken, and in grief. Yesterday, in Cleveland, Tennessee, one of those awful events occurred. One of our partners in recovery determined to end his struggle. Without discussing what others have told me that were around him for his last two days alive, I have to share this:

There were signs. We need to pay more attention to those signs. We need to hear past “I’m fine”. We need to recognize the look of despair in the eyes, the sudden changes in behavior.

I’m not suggesting anyone could have done anything, or anyone should feel guilty, just that this could be a jolt that causes us to be more attentive to those around us. More aware.

Paul Steele will be missed, let’s not let his passing be in vain. Let’s make it make us better.

Our purpose is to love one another, let’s fill that purpose as a community.
