After participating in a SOCIAL Studies Academy led by Professor of Agricultural Education, Dale Layfield, teacher Nora McMillan was inspired to create the Growing Minds Hydroponic Garden Club at Starr-Iva Middle School, giving students a hands-on way to explore agriculture, STEM and history.
The club is the first of its kind for sixth-grade students at the school. Students use 10 indoor hydroponic systems to grow a variety of crops, monitor plant growth, record observations and learn how agriculture connects to science, water resources, economics and society. Through regular meetings, the students see firsthand how food is produced and how natural resources support everyday life.
Supported by U.S. Department of Agriculture grant funding and a College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences partnership, the program is helping strengthen agricultural literacy while sparking curiosity and critical thinking among the next generation of learners.
