Reaching out can feel like a big step — especially when you don’t know what to expect.
If you’ve got questions about counseling, we’ve got answers:
Is counseling really confidential?
Yes — Counseling sessions stay private, are not reported to command and do not affect your job or clearance. The only exceptions are when abuse, illegal activity or someone’s safety is involved.
Is counseling just for mental health support?
No — Get support through any challenge, stressor or transition in military life. Use up to 12 sessions to talk it through and find next steps. Return to counseling again when different challenges come up.
What can I talk to a counselor about?
You only have to share what you’re comfortable sharing. Counselors are specially trained with the military in mind and provide support for navigating everyday stress, relationship conflicts, grief, relocation and more.
Will I have to pay?
Counseling is free for eligible members of the military community — including active-duty, National Guard and reserve service members, spouses, dependents, survivors and veteran families for up to 365 days after separation.
How do I get started?
Call or start a secure chat to schedule a confidential session. Depending on your situation, you’ll have the option to meet in person, over the phone, virtually or through secure, live chat.
