This Friday is National Purple Heart Day across the U.S. Observed annually on August 7th, the day honors and recognizes the brave men and women who were wounded or killed in service to our country. The Purple Heart was established by George Washington in 1782 as the "Badge of Military Merit" and represents sacrifice, resilience, and courage. Join us between noon and 2 pm ET Friday as we re-air conversations from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, USA National Convention held recently in New Bern, North Carolina. ~ Chris

If you know me, you know I wear my heart on my sleeve. I’ve never believed that leadership is about titles, positions, or recognition. It’s about people.

I try to help wherever I can, offer a hand when someone needs it, and most importantly, listen when someone has something to say. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person isn’t money, a present, or even advice—it’s our time, our compassion, and our willingness to simply be present.

As leaders in our communities, as veterans, as friends, as neighbors, and as brothers and sisters, we have a responsibility to reach out more often. Offer a genuine smile. Ask, “How are you?”—and then truly listen to the answer. That simple conversation could be the moment someone realizes they are not alone.

How often do we tell someone we love them… just because? Not because they’re family. Not because we expect anything in return. But because another human being may need to hear those words at that very moment.

Never underestimate the impact you have on another person’s life. You may never know whose burden you helped lighten, whose hope you restored, or whose life you changed with one small act of kindness. You may never see the difference—but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

One kind word. One handshake. One hug. One smile. One moment of compassion. That’s all it can take to change the course of someone’s day—or even their life.

So I ask each of you to BE THE ONE.

Be the one who reaches out first.
Be the one who listens without judgment.
Be the one who offers hope instead of criticism.
Be the one who reminds another person that they matter.

Because in just one split second, your kindness may become someone else’s reason to keep going.

And to me, there is no greater act of leadership, service, or love than that.
