Compatible Lands Foundation Supporting Military Readiness and Resilience Through Land Conservation

The Compatible Lands Foundation addresses land use challenges through collaborative land conservation efforts. We work with public agencies, local governments, private landowners, and other partners to identify, enhance and protect important undeveloped or inappropriately developed lands and prohibit incompatible land uses through a variety of conservation tools. In most cases, CLF purchases conse

rvation easements from willing landowners, prohibiting incompatible land uses but allowing open space activities such as farming, ranching, and hunting.

At Compatible Lands Foundation, we protect the land that provides space for military training while preserving the wildlife habitat and working lands that make these landscapes so valuable. By conserving open spaces, we help prevent incompatible development and ensure these lands continue supporting both our nation's readiness and the natural resources we all depend on.

At the Compatible Lands Foundation, conservation isn’t just about open space — it’s about keeping working lands productive, protecting wildlife habitat, and supporting the military readiness that keeps our nation secure.

Every conserved acre helps reduce incompatible development and preserve the landscapes that matter most.

Because once open land is gone, we don’t get it back.

This Memorial Day, Compatible Lands Foundation honors the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

As we remember their sacrifice, we remain committed to protecting the lands that support military readiness, working communities, and the future of our nation.

Today, we honor the fallen — and the mission they defended.

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES

Soldiers assigned to the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) have conducted the annual Memorial Day tradition since 1948, placing more than 260,000 flags throughout the cemetery to honor fallen service members, veterans, and their families.

Incompatible development happens when growth around military installations interferes with training, operations, or safety.

Things like dense housing, tall structures, or excessive lighting and noise complaints can limit military readiness and impact local landscapes.

That’s why Compatible Lands Foundation works with landowners and partners to conserve working lands that support both healthy communities and the military mission.

What is Military Readiness?

Military readiness means our armed forces are trained, equipped, and prepared to respond when duty calls. Protecting compatible land around installations helps ensure realistic training can continue — while also conserving working lands, wildlife habitat, and natural resources.

Small bird = Big impact!

The Golden-cheeked Warbler is found only in Texas—and its survival depends on the health of our Hill Country woodlands. By conserving working lands and protecting critical habitat, Compatible Lands Foundation helps ensure this iconic species continues to thrive alongside strong, mission-ready military installations.

Military training isn’t optional—it’s essential.

From pilots to ground forces, realistic training ensures our military is ready when it matters most.

But that training depends on something simple: space.

At Compatible Lands Foundation, we work to protect the land that makes readiness possible—before it’s gone.
