Rogers County Literacy Council

Rogers County Literacy Council The Rogers County Literacy Council is a private, non-profit volunteer organization offering literacy Prepare for employment, or citizenship.

The Rogers County Literacy Council was formed in 1985 as a result of a series of stories published in the Claremore Daily Progress newspaper about illiteracy. We are a 501(c)(3) organization governed by a community-based Board of Directors. When the new facilities of the Will Rogers Library in Claremore opened in 1994, the City of Claremore dedicated two rooms to the Council’s use, one of which is

an office for the Executive Director. The Council office houses our library of tutor reference materials, student learning materials, low-level reading-for-pleasure books, computer-based learning software, space for tutoring, and a collection of book/audio tape sets for student use. The Council is a member of the Oklahoma Literacy Coalition and ProLiteracy America. Volunteers complete the Oklahoma Deparment of Libraries approved Open Minds training. What We Do: Our mission is to offer free basic English tutoring to any person in Rogers County who is 16 years or older and reads below eighth grade level, and to offer free English Language Learner (ELL) tutoring to Rogers County non-native speakers who want to improve their English reading and speaking skills. We teach basic English and English as a second language for adult learners who want to:
Learn to improve their reading skills for home or work. Improve their life skills through better understanding. We train volunteer tutors to: Understand the learning process, recognize and overcome some of the common learning stumbling blocks, use teaching tools to keep it rewarding for everyone. Helping each other succed - Each One Teach One is our motto.

We are proud to recognize two incredible instructors, Yadira Núñez-Gaxiola and Malinda Brown, in our 2026–2027 Instructor Appreciation Spotlight. 💚

Their compassion, patience, and dedication continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of our learners and throughout our community. We are deeply grateful for the encouragement, support, and heart they bring to our programs each day.

We would also like to thank Mrs. Riley for stepping in to support our English HiSET program during the spring semester. While not pictured, her time and dedication are sincerely appreciated as well.

Thank you all for the difference you make in the lives of our learners!

🧡 Happy Thanksgiving from the Rogers County Literacy Council

As I sit with gratitude today, I can’t help but reflect on the generations of my own family who came before me—hard-working, determined, resilient people who were often technically uneducated, and in some cases, completely illiterate. They built lives, raised families, and survived hardships with limited access to the opportunities we now work every day to provide for others.

Because of that history, I don’t believe I found this role; I truly believe it found me.
Literacy isn’t just textbooks and worksheets. It’s dignity. It’s independence. It’s unlocking doors that felt permanently closed. It’s the difference between surviving and thriving.

And it is my honor to stand in the gap now—to serve the adults of Rogers County and Northeast Oklahoma with compassion, respect, and unwavering belief in their potential.

I’m grateful every day for the learners who trust us, the tutors who give their time, the supporters who keep us moving, and this community that lets us walk beside them. We are building something lasting—and we get to do it together.

From my heart to yours—
Happy Thanksgiving.
May we all continue to lift each other up, one skill, one goal, one life at a time.
