What's happening in the Marianas?

Super Typhoon Sinlaku recently tore through the Northern Mariana Islands with 160+ mph winds, leaving homes roofless and thousands in emergency shelters.

But this isn't just a "natural disaster" —it's a direct result of a global climate crisis hitting island nations first and hardest.

To the Indigenous communities of the Marianas, this storm is a "disturbed breath," a rupture in the sacred balance of the islands. We cannot rely on the same colonial systems that failed to protect the land to now fix it.

How to help:
Move from Charity to Solidarity: Support mutual aid efforts that are already on the ground.

Prioritize Sovereignty: Real resilience comes from Indigenous land stewardship and traditional knowledge.

Take Action: Support culturally grounded relief funds.

This is a time for reciprocity, not "savior" models. Let's stand with the Marianas as they heal the land and the community.

Today we honor Indigenous women, the heartbeat of our community’s wellness.

Wellness in food grown in healthy soil.
Wellness in beading, weaving, art, writing.
Wellness in civic participation and land stewardship.
Wellness in mental health support rooted in culture and belonging.

Indigenous women understand a truth the world often forgets: health is collective, and at Urban Native Collective, Indigenous women lead this work every day. Through hiking groups, yoga, gardening, land stewardship, civic engagement, and culturally-rooted mental health support, women are weaving a safety net of belonging.

If you believe in community-led healing, it’s time to uplift the matriarchs making it a reality!

This is the escalation of a federal operation that is turning our city into a war zone and putting community members, legal observers, and protectors directly in the line of fire.

Over the past year, UNC has been working to ensure the health and wellness of all our Indigenous relatives. While attacks on those Native to this land are not new to us, it has been necessary for our collective to focus even more intently on ensuring the security and wellbeing of our community, friends, and neighbors.

As Native People, we continue to face the same colonial violence which has attacked our communities and Nations for over 500 years.

Despite this, we have always fought to dig deeper into our People, ways, and land. The deeper our roots grow, the higher we rise. This year proved what we’ve always known. When we tend to the ground beneath us, when we gather intentionally, when we refuse to be moved, everything else becomes possible.

Our community space experienced damage due to a plumbing issue in the unit above us, today. Thankfully, no one was harmed.

We are deeply grateful to the Northside community members who showed up immediately to help contain the situation and care for the space. That care means everything to us.

We were already closed in observance of the Winter Solstice, and we will remain closed while repairs are assessed and completed. We will share updates as needed.

Thank you for holding this space with us. If you feel inclined to send support, feel free to use our donation link in our bio.
