The unexpected thing of the day: Benny's canopy frame broke and collapsed, either from wind or encroachment from the fig tree. We have a spare that we bought when they were on sale. We'll either have to trim the fig tree or set the canopy lower.

It looks like love is in the air for the Summer Solstice. We're in a drought and we keep a shallow bowl of clean, fresh water in the shade of the fig tree. We routinely see box turtles and toads using it, especially early in the morning.

Although not listed as endangered, the eastern box turtle is a "species of special concern" since their numbers are declining. Please be kind to them and watch for them on the roadways.

This is where eggs come from.😪 The chickens shown in the video are NOT the pretty ones shown in this photo. The ones being dumped alive into a landfill, are white leghorn hens. They are used in the commercial egg industry. They live miserable lives, in overcrowded filthy cages inside warehouses. When egg production falls, they are no longer useful. Birds are not included in the Himane Methods of Slaughter Act.

It's hard to fit Jim's entire garden into one photo. He's worked on it for many years. It's 16 patches, on a hillside. He dug out one patch (of mostly clay) per year. Right now, from this angle, bottom to top are: Column 1 -- green onions, onions, kohlrabi with corn, butternut squash. Column 2 -- cabbage, lettuce and just-seeded cowpeas, peppers to be planted tomorrow, cucumbers. Column 3-- broccoli, tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes. Column 4 -- cauliflower, okra, peppers, green onions. The chickens get a lot of bounty from this.

While Anissa is recovering from heart surgery her husband, Mike, is on unpaid leave from work, caring for Anissa and tending to those in their care. Our friend, Anissa, who runs Mother Clucker's Microsanctuary, is still in the hospital, following emergency heart surgery on May 12. She is so much better and hopes to be home soon.
