Chocowinty, NC 27817 The Beaufort County Choral Society is a chorus that performs free of charge for audiences in Beaufort County, NC and the surrounding areas. Rehearsals take place weekly at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, NC. Our conductor is Alejandro Oliveros, an energetic and enthusiastic musician pursuing his Master’s

degree in choral conducting. The chorus has 35 members, and we are seeking to expand. Although not all of our singers read music, it is helpful. Singers of all ages are welcome to join, but they should be able to blend their voices with the chorus. Dues are $50 a semester which are used to pay our director, accompanist, and for music, venue rentals and additional instrumentalists, if applicable. Limited scholarships are available to those who really want to sing but can't afford the dues.

We had a great first night rehearsal last night. We met our new director, David Washer, his wife Marilyn and their baby. We welcomed back our fabulous collaborative pianist, Sarah Weeks. And we also welcomed 4 new members and 2 former members who have returned to the fold! After a Meet & Greet with light refreshments, we got down to business and started going through some of the great music David has picked out for the Christmas/Winter concert.

I joined the choir because I enjoy singing.

I did not join because I believed I had the finest voice in the room. I simply thought it would be pleasant to spend an evening with good people, learn a few songs, and make a little music together.

At the first rehearsal, everything seemed to be going well.

The director lifted both hands. The piano began. Everyone took a breath and started singing.

A few moments later, I noticed two people looking in my direction.

I assumed they were impressed.

Then another singer lowered her music and stared at me. Someone else covered their mouth, and the director began making a very careful hand motion that seemed to be meant especially for my side of the room.

That was when I began to suspect I might not be singing the same note as everyone else.

Still, I kept going. There is no sense losing confidence halfway through a song.

When we finished, there was a brief silence. The director smiled kindly and suggested we try that section again.

Apparently, I had discovered a note that was not printed anywhere on the page.

I may never be the strongest singer in the choir, but I make up for it with enthusiasm. And sometimes enthusiasm carries much farther than the right note.
