BREAKING — We are heartbroken to share the news that a Durham firefighter died in the line of duty this morning while battling a building fire in the 400 block of Marly Road near Highway 70 in Southeast Durham.

Two other firefighters were injured and transported to the hospital. They are expected to survive.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Durham Fire Department, the firefighter’s family and loved ones, and the two injured firefighters.

We stand with the entire Durham community as we mourn this tragic loss.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Ada Evans of the Clarks Neck Fire and Rescue Department. Ada served on the board of our Fire Association for many years and was instrumental in arranging the Kids Safety Expo many of those years and later. Ada and her husband Jim were Clark Necks Firefighters of the Year in 2005. In 2010 Ada was selected for that honor by herself and eventually was selected as both the Beaufort County and Pitt County Firefighter of the Year. Ada's dedication to the fire service and our community will be greatly missed.

Services will be Sunday at the Joseph Paul Funeral Home

The Beaufort County NC Emergency Services Association would like to thank the Chocowinity EMS and its members for all their many years of service to their community.

EMS services will still be provided to the Chocowinity community by the Beaufort County EMS who will respond from the Chocowinity Fire Department to calls. Residents of the area should see no changes in service.

If you don’t NEED to be out, please stay home! If you are already out, please take it slow getting home! Beaufort County first responders have already been called out to 4 wrecks in the last hour.

Please think about it like this - when you decide to go out and something happens, you are also risking the lives of us first responders that will need to respond to your accident. So please keep yourself and others safe by staying home!

On a better note, 8340 made its debut at its first call today!
