The AS Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC) was opened in 2011 at Chico State as an expansion of the Women's Center in an effort to further promote human rights and the equal representation of marginalized students on Chico State's campus. The Women's Center at Chico State began during a time

when the women's movement was gaining momentum throughout the country. In 1971 a small group of dedicated women realized the importance of creating an organization where women could explore their mutual concerns and also help educate the campus and community about progressive women's issues. Thanks to the vision of those women, the financial help from a memorial fund, and the support of the Associated Students, the Women's Center is an organization that has lasted for 40 years and continues to be a vital part of our community. With the recent expansion to the GSEC, we not only continue to offer a Women's Program, but we have instituted an Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Program. With this addition we are able to further our efforts in creating a campus understanding and accepting of all sexual and gender identities. We don't live in a perfect world and probably never will, but programs like the GSEC and Women's Centers will continue to advocate for social justice as long as the damaging ideologies of sexism, racism, heterosexism, classism, and any other form of oppression exists. The GSEC is engaged in the campus and community, through which our objective is to challenge harmful societal norms and initiate change by raising awareness of social justice issues through various educational forums, and providing a supportive space in which interns and volunteers can develop valuable leadership, organizational and communication skills.

Pride Month is a celebration, but it’s also a reminder of the courage, resilience, and community that made progress possible. When we look back on these moments from past LGBTQIA+ and Trans rights demonstrations, we honor those who raised their voices, showed up for one another, and helped create a more inclusive future 🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Happy Pride Month from GSEC❤️

Thinking about joining us at Take Back the Night?

Meet us at Trinity Lawn by 6pm to hear a warm welcome from the GSEC team, followed by a speech from our keynote speaker. Audrey Denney is a lifelong advocate for Northern California.

After Audrey’s speech, we will be providing the space for survivors and allies to Take Back the Mic and make their voices heard. If you’re interested in performing, scan the QR code on our flyers and sign up by April 24th!

At 7:15 we will begin our march to end sexual violence. We will leave from Trinity Lawn and march through a preplanned route through neighborhoods like Ivy St and Hazel St. A map will be available to follow.

Bring a friend and your loud voices to Take Back the Night!
