Founded in 1892, Holy Trinity Cathedral is home to the oldest Orthodox parish in Chicago. This beautiful church was designed by the famous American architect, Louis Sullivan. Tikhon of Moscow in 1903 and built under the leadership of St. John Kochurov of Chicago, who was martyred in the Bolshevik Revolution. Restoration Update!

One of the main features of the this project is restoring the MAIN ENTRANCE to its original state back in 1903.

By returning this area closer to its original state it will change the overall experience of entry into the Rectory.

There will now be a natural transition from the Cathedral Courtyard into an open air porch giving a sense of entering the building before entering the building. The bluestone will continue from the courtyard into the outer entry.

Once one enters the front door they will be greeted with a high ceiling and chandelier illuminating the new staircase. The new staircase will be over double the size of the previous staircase providing more room and safety.

The wall going down will also be decorated with wooden panels, giving the stairs a rich and warm experience.

The MAIN ENTRANCE will also have a new keyless entry system and intercom providing easier accessibility and safety.

The MAIN ENTERANCE is being opened at this very moment. This piece of the restoration is a return to how one would have experienced Sullivan’s entry back in 1903.

The Orthodox Church in America celebrated the canonization of one of the most beloved saints of America, St. Herman of Alaska, August 8 and August 9. His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest presided over services for the feast at the Diocesan Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL.

On Saturday, August 8, the All Night Vigil was served for the feast of the Resurrection of the Lord and for St. Herman. On Sunday, August 9, His Eminence presided over the liturgy and was assisted by, Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Archpriest Tarasiy Maxim, Deacon Paul Garklavs, and Deacon Timothy Heinbokel. The Cathedral Choir was directed by Reader Vladimir Lymar.

During his sermon, the Archbishop talked about the simple and holy life of the Elder of Alaska. The Archbishop participate in the annual pilgrimage to Spruce Island countless times and spoke about it beauty.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, the Archbishop congratulated the clergy and faithful on the feast and noted the historical connection that the diocese has with the canonization of St. Herman. The late Archbishop John (Garklavs) participated in the glorification that took place 56 years ago.

Following the festal meal, Fr. Alexander and the Cathedral faithful gathered before the relics of St. Herman to sing the Akathist to the saint.

The Diocesan Feast of the Wonderworking Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was celebrated by His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Midwest on June 25 and June 26 at the Diocesan Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL.

The feast began with the celebration of the All Night Vigil on the Thursday evening. The Archbishop was joined by clergy from the Chicago Deanery. The Chicago Deanery Male Choir sang the responses under the direction of Reader Philip Sokolov.

On Friday, June 26, at the invitation of Archbishop Daniel, the Hierarchical Liturgy was presided over by His Grace Bishop Spyridon of Chicago & Mid-America (ROCOR). Serving with the hierarchs were Archpriest Herman Kincaid, Chancellor, Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Mitered Archpriest Vladimir Kovalchuk, Priest Nikolai Lochmatow, Priest Jacob VanSickle, Priest John Kennerk, Priest Anthony Saunders, Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov, Deacon Paul Garklavs, and Deacon Timothy Heinbokel. The choir was directed by Reader Vladimir Lymar.

Following the Divine Liturgy a prayer to the Mother of God was read.

The Archbishop welcomed Bishop Spyridon and expressed his gratitude to all who came to keep this important feast.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a reception was held in the Cathedral Courtyard.

The feast of the Chicago Tikhvin Icon will be Thursday evening at 6pm and Friday morning at 9:30am. This is a very special feast for the Cathedral and a reminder that our Holy Mother not only visited this Cathedral through her holy Tikhvin Icon in the past, but that she is also with us now. We will also be hosting other hierarchs, clergy, and faithful from around the diocese for this important feast.

Per our custom, a call for flowers to be placed at the Tikhvin Icon has been made. Please bring flowers big and small to be placed at the icon of our Holy Lady.

On Monday June 1, the Day of the Holy Spirit, His Eminence concelebrated the Divine Liturgy with Bishop Spyridon of Chicago and Mid-America (ROCOR), and Bishop Serafim of Kostajnica (Serbian).

The hierarchs were assisted by Archpriest Herman Kincaid, Chancellor, Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Mitered Archpriest Vladimir Kovalchuk, Archpriest Athanasios Chulakov, Archpriest Tarasiy Maxim, Archpriest Michael Volzhanskii, Priest Antony Alekseyenko, Priest Nikolai Lochmatow, Priest John Kennerk, Priest Daniel Greeson, Priest Joseph Whittaker, Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov, Deacon Paul Garklavs, and Deacon Timothy Heinbokel.

A cross procession was held following the Divine Liturgy.

The Archbishop welcomed the visiting hierarchs to the Cathedral and thanked them for attending the feast. This was Bishop Spyridon and Bishop Serafim’s first time serving at the Cathedral. The Archbishop also honored Protodeacon Thomas Keith on the occasion of his 20th anniversary of ordination.

After the Prayers of Thanksgiving a festival meal was held in the Cathedral courtyard.

On May 31, 2026 the cathedral celebrated its altar feast of Pentecost led by Archbishop Daniel and cathedral clergy. In his sermon the Archbishop remembered how St John Kochurov, like the apostles, went out to a new land to spread the word of the Lord.
Reader Vlodomyr Lymar lead the choir and the cathedral community celebrated in the courtyard together while enjoying a Highlander Folk music group from the Chicago area.

The Great Feast of Pentecost, the Altar Feast of the Cathedral will be May 30, May 31, and June 1 of this year. A special surprise is in the works for our celebration after liturgy and kneeling vespers on Sunday. We welcome all visiting hierarchs and clergy on Holy Spirit Monday. On Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Midwest welcomed His Grace Bishop Vasily of San Francisco and the West to the Diocesan Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL.

On Saturday evening, the bishops attended the All Night Vigil served by the Cathedral Clergy.

Sunday morning, the commemoration of the Myrrhbearing Women, Archbishop Daniel and Bishop Vasily concelebrated the Divine Liturgy and serving with the bishops were Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Archpriest Tasrasiy Maxim, Deacon Paul Garklavs and Deacon Timothy Heinbokel. The Cathedral Choir was directed by Reader Vladimir Lymar.

Following the liturgy, His Eminence welcomed Bishop Vasily noting the historical ties between the two diocese in his address to the bishop. In return, Bishop Vasily expressed his gratitude for the invitation to visit the Diocese of the Midwest and for the opportunity to serve at the Cathedral. Fr. Alexander presented His Grace with a hand-painted portrait of the historic Cathedral the was done by the hand of one of the Cathedral parishioners.

A festive meal was held following the Prayers of Thanksgiving.
