Founded in 1892, Holy Trinity Cathedral is home to the oldest Orthodox parish in Chicago. This beautiful church was designed by the famous American architect, Louis Sullivan. Tikhon of Moscow in 1903 and built under the leadership of St. John Kochurov of Chicago, who was martyred in the Bolshevik Revolution. Located in the heart of Chicago’s historic Ukrainian Village-Wicker Park neighborhood, Holy Trinity has been a vital part of the community for more than a century. It’s an official City of Chicago Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it’s the center of religious life for many Orthodox faithful and their families. We are dedicated to serving the people of God in the spirit of Christian love, and we invite you to come and worship with us whenever you are in the Ukrainian Village-Wicker Park area.

October is the month in which we celebrate our holy hieromartyr John of Chicago. St. John has played a very special role in the life of HTC. It would be fare to say that if God did not send his holy priest to this community at that time who knows if it would have survived more than 134 years. St. John dedicated himself to building this temple and the Church in Chicago and throughout America. His prayers still continue to guide and assist us to this very day. Many can attest to the intersessions of St. John both at the Cathedral and in their personal life. May his prayers never leave us. St. John pray to God for us.

We are coming down to the final weeks of our renovation project which is very exciting for our community. We will soon be entering into a beautifully renovated space that has been accomplished at a very high level.
Funds are still needed to complete this work. From Oct. 1 through the end of 2026, we will be running a campaign to raise at least $100,000. This will give us three months to try to reach this goal, and God willing, even exceed it. Please be sure to show your support by making financial contributions during this time, but also to spread the word. May it be blessed.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Holy Trinity Cathedral,

Every year you are approached during the month of October for a very important reason — your help is needed. 

If you are viewing this message, it is because you have shown some type of interest in this historic and holy Cathedral. For some of you, this is your spiritual home, or has played an important role in your life at one point. Others are admires of the beautiful architecture and want to support the significant landmarks of this city and country. Regardless of the area of your interest, Holy Trinity Cathedral is a special place to you and you want to see it maintained and cared for. 

We are now coming towards the end of our PHASE I $1 million renovation and restoration project of our historic Rectory. Like all of the major projects we have taken on these past years, this project was desperately needed to care for the building and to make better use of the space for our growing parish.

Our usual goal with our “Annual St. John of Chicago Appeal” is to raise funds for the ongoing care of this property. This year we have a goal of raising at least $100,000 by the end of 2026 to go towards this specific project. Although the work is nearing completion funds are still needed to pay for the construction.

The Cathedral’s main source of funding for these projects is you - our beloved parishioners, past parishioners, friends, neighbors, architecture lovers, history enthusiasts, and Orthodox Christians who want to see their holy sites cared for and built up. For years now we have seen many great developments at the Cathedral and it has been due to our ability to work together and see these important projects through.

On the evening of September 13 and the morning of Sept 14 the Great Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross was celebrated at the cathedral. Being the cathedral of the Diocese of the Midwest, the rite of the Exaltation of the Cross was performed at the All Night Vigil by Priest Alexander, Deacon Paul Garklavs, Deacon Timothy Heinbockel, and faithful servers. The Diocesan Cathedral of Chicago and the Midwest welcomed the miraculous Iveron Hawaiian Icon of the Mother of God on Monday, September 7, the Prefeast of the Nativity of the Theotokos.

The Icon was greeted by Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean and Priest Philip Maikkula and brought to the center of the Cathedral. Divine Liturgy was served by Fr. Alexander, Priest Nectarios Yangson, the Guardian of the Icon, Fr. Philip, and Deacon Seraphim Andov. The Cathedral Choir was directed by Reader Vladimir Lymar.

Following the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, the Akathist to the Hawaiian Icon was served. His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest offered his prayers before the Holy Icon.

At the conclusion of the Akathist, Fr. Nectarios offered a few words on the gospel reading and the miracles that he has recently witnessed during the Holy Icon’s travels. The faithful had the opportunity to venerate the Icon and be anointed with the holy myrrh that is streaming from the Icon.

Several hundred people passed through the Cathedral throughout the morning and the afternoon that the icon was present. The beloved icon of the Virgin Mary is currently visiting Chicago churches and will continue to travel to parishes throughout the Midwest.

We are honored to host the wonderworking and myrrh-streaming Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God on September 7, 2026.

This is a very special opportunity to venerate the miraculous icon at the cathedral and we are very grateful to her custodian for bringing her to our community. Divine Liturgy at 9:30am followed by the Akathist for the icon.

Restoration Update!

One of the main features of the this project is restoring the MAIN ENTRANCE to its original state back in 1903.

By returning this area closer to its original state it will change the overall experience of entry into the Rectory.

There will now be a natural transition from the Cathedral Courtyard into an open air porch giving a sense of entering the building before entering the building. The bluestone will continue from the courtyard into the outer entry.

Once one enters the front door they will be greeted with a high ceiling and chandelier illuminating the new staircase. The new staircase will be over double the size of the previous staircase providing more room and safety.

The wall going down will also be decorated with wooden panels, giving the stairs a rich and warm experience.

The MAIN ENTRANCE will also have a new keyless entry system and intercom providing easier accessibility and safety.

The MAIN ENTERANCE is being opened at this very moment. This piece of the restoration is a return to how one would have experienced Sullivan’s entry back in 1903.

The Orthodox Church in America celebrated the canonization of one of the most beloved saints of America, St. Herman of Alaska, August 8 and August 9. His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest presided over services for the feast at the Diocesan Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL.

On Saturday, August 8, the All Night Vigil was served for the feast of the Resurrection of the Lord and for St. Herman. On Sunday, August 9, His Eminence presided over the liturgy and was assisted by, Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Archpriest Tarasiy Maxim, Deacon Paul Garklavs, and Deacon Timothy Heinbokel. The Cathedral Choir was directed by Reader Vladimir Lymar.

During his sermon, the Archbishop talked about the simple and holy life of the Elder of Alaska. The Archbishop participate in the annual pilgrimage to Spruce Island countless times and spoke about it beauty.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, the Archbishop congratulated the clergy and faithful on the feast and noted the historical connection that the diocese has with the canonization of St. Herman. The late Archbishop John (Garklavs) participated in the glorification that took place 56 years ago.

Following the festal meal, Fr. Alexander and the Cathedral faithful gathered before the relics of St. Herman to sing the Akathist to the saint.

The Diocesan Feast of the Wonderworking Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was celebrated by His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of Chicago and the Midwest on June 25 and June 26 at the Diocesan Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL.

The feast began with the celebration of the All Night Vigil on the Thursday evening. The Archbishop was joined by clergy from the Chicago Deanery. The Chicago Deanery Male Choir sang the responses under the direction of Reader Philip Sokolov.

On Friday, June 26, at the invitation of Archbishop Daniel, the Hierarchical Liturgy was presided over by His Grace Bishop Spyridon of Chicago & Mid-America (ROCOR). Serving with the hierarchs were Archpriest Herman Kincaid, Chancellor, Priest Alexander Koranda, Cathedral Dean, Mitered Archpriest Vladimir Kovalchuk, Priest Nikolai Lochmatow, Priest Jacob VanSickle, Priest John Kennerk, Priest Anthony Saunders, Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov, Deacon Paul Garklavs, and Deacon Timothy Heinbokel. The choir was directed by Reader Vladimir Lymar.

Following the Divine Liturgy a prayer to the Mother of God was read.

The Archbishop welcomed Bishop Spyridon and expressed his gratitude to all who came to keep this important feast.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a reception was held in the Cathedral Courtyard.

The feast of the Chicago Tikhvin Icon will be Thursday evening at 6pm and Friday morning at 9:30am. This is a very special feast for the Cathedral and a reminder that our Holy Mother not only visited this Cathedral through her holy Tikhvin Icon in the past, but that she is also with us now. We will also be hosting other hierarchs, clergy, and faithful from around the diocese for this important feast.

Per our custom, a call for flowers to be placed at the Tikhvin Icon has been made. Please bring flowers big and small to be placed at the icon of our Holy Lady.
