Sunrise Chicago is proud to endorse Emma Lozano for Chicago Board of Education District 7A! Emma has lived in Pilsen since the age of 5 and has been a part of the immigrant and education justice struggles for decades. Emma currently serves as President of Centro Sin Fronteras, which has fought for reduced class sizes, bilingual education, removing lead from school buildings, and providing COVID testing to students. At its core, Emma’s campaign has the same set of beliefs underpinning a Green New Deal for Chicago Public Schools: every child in the city of Chicago deserves to feel safe, have access to an excellent public education, and learn in a healthy environment.

Sunrise Chicago is proud to re-endorse Anusha Thotakura for Chicago Board of Education District 6A! Anusha is a former middle school math teacher and daughter of immigrants who was appointed to the Chicago Board of Education in 2025. During her time on the Board, she has worked alongside the Healthy Green Schools Coalition as the lead sponsor of the Green Schools, Good Jobs, Bright Futures Resolution, establishing a Green Schools Pilot Program that is already installing renewable energy projects at CPS schools, saving the district money, and connecting students to pathways to green jobs.

Jitu is a CPS graduate, CPS parent, former African American history teacher, and has 20 years of experience leading cultural response youth leadership programs. Jitu has been on the front lines of the fight for an elected schools board and against racist public school closures for years, notably having helped organize and lead the hunger strike to save Dyett High School. He’s also been one of the leading voices in the creation of the Sustainable Community Schools model which shows the potential of what our public schools can mean for our communities if we fully invest in them.

Karen has been a resident of Uptown for nearly a half century, sent her daughter to CPS schools, has served on local school councils, and spent nearly 3 decades as a science teacher. Through it all, Karen has also been a committed community organizer from being a member of the Intercommunal Survival Committee to being a part of Northside Action for Justice in the present. During her current term on the Board of Education, Karen was a co-sponsor of the Green Schools, Good Jobs, & Bright Futures Resolution which created a pilot of renewable energy projects at CPS schools. Once re-elected, Karen will continue what she’s been doing her entire life: fighting for environmental justice with all its intersections.

Sunrise Chicago is proud to re-endorse Jason Dónes for the Chicago Board of Education District 3B! Jason grew up in and has lived in Humboldt Park for most of his life. He’s a CPS alum, a former CPS teacher, the husband of a current CPS teacher, and is serving his fourth term as a local school council member. The idea that climate and environmental justice are intertwined with education justice isn’t just an idea for Jason; his LSC just last year had to fight to get CPS’s attention over lead paint in their school. As a board member, he will make green, healthy, and sustainable schools a central part of how we invest in the future of students and communities.

Norma is a lifelong Logan Square resident, CPS alum, CPS parent who has been deeply involved in her community as a parent mentor, a leader within the Northwest Side Rapid Response Team, and through organizing alongside Palenque LSNA. Norma’s campaign reflects the idea that our public schools can and must be the cornerstones of healthy and strong communities, not only by providing mental health care services, arts programming, and multilingual education, but also as a front line in combatting the climate crisis.

Debby is a retired bilingual high school history teacher who has called her district home for nearly 40 years. She’s been a part of the fight for a better world for even longer; having been active in the women’s rights, anti-war, civil rights, and labor movements since she was in high school. We’re backing Debby for another term on the Board of Education because she understands that tackling the root causes of a profit focused economic system and corporate greed are the path towards education and environmental justice.

Join One Northside and Sunrise Movement Chicago for a night of conversation, shared food, and learning about the movement for corporate climate accountability here in Illinois. We’ll break bread, learn about the fight for climate justice on the North Side of Chicago, and connect with our community.
