Food for Thought
The Native Elderberry, Sambucus Nigra Canadensis is blooming happily now along roadsides, in moist bottomlands and open prairie edges. It rivals many hydrandea as an attractive versatile shrub, great for large open landscapes. Good companions to this plant are Swamp Milkweed, Elm Leafed Goldenrod, Wild Bergamot and Nine Bark shrub, which is similar in texture and habit. Elderberry is a deciduous, spreading, sprawling plant that suckers and forms colonies. It is native to a large area of N. America, east of the Rocky Mts, and south to Bolivia.
This shrub was made famous by Elton John’s song, “Elderberry Wine” in the 1970’s. But the flowers and berries have long been used for jellies & pies, and healing properties were first noted by Hippocrates as early as 400 BC
Best of all, the Elderberry is an excellent food source for many species of birds, mammals and insects. They consume the fruit and spread the seeds far and wide. 👀 Healthy habitats provide food and shelter for everyone.
