The mission of the Black Researchers Collective is to advance racial equity by training and equipping communities with research tools to be more civically engaged and policy-informed.

The City of Chicago is conducting its first Chicago Reparations Study, a transformative action plan to build pathways to repair the generational harm faced by Black Chicagoans. The study has two core components: (1) a study of harm, documenting the policies and practices that caused damage across generations, and (2) recommendations of remedies, laying out concrete policy solutions for repair.

Black Researchers Collective is proud to support this work by leading the 2026 Chicago Community Reparations Survey, the research instrument that gives Black Chicagoans a direct voice in both the documentation of harm and the vision for what repair looks like. We invite you to take the survey (linked in our bio) and share it with your networks to help contribute to this important work in our city.

Black Researchers Collective (BRC) is partnering with the Association of Public Data Users (APDU), Georgetown’s Massive Data Institute, and The Leadership Education Fund on a community data privacy project in Chicago.

BRC will facilitate two 90-minute, in-person listening sessions with Chicago residents to understand community perspectives on data privacy risks, safeguards, and policy priorities. These discussions will help inform broader cross-sector dialogues and contribute to APDU’s and the Georgetown Massive Data Institute’s effort to shape a policy agenda that addresses current and emerging threats to data privacy, including expanded federal data sharing and increased disclosure risks. Participation stipends and small bites included.

Bakange received her Bachelor of Arts from DePaul University, where she studied Political Science and African/Black Diaspora Studies (ABD). Professionally, she is looking forward to mentorship from both executive leadership and community members. She brings an expansive, systems-driven mindset to the BRC, and we’re so happy to have her on board. Welcome Bakange! 🎉

We are still in search of one more Subject Matter Expert (SME) to teach programming for our Youth Research & Data Justice Academy! We are looking for an instructor for our Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the People module taught during May 2026. Must be located in the Chicagoland area, programming is held in person at sites across city. Please read the description above, and apply by sending your resume and cover letter to [email protected]. Applicants will be interviewed on a rolling basis, and we’re looking to fill this role ASAP!

Black Researchers Collective is excited to share that our micro-documentary, Data Disaggregation in Illinois, has been nominated for Best Documentary Short in the 2026 Chicago Film Frenzy festival! This micro-doc is the product of Civic Data Forums that we hosted in 2025, gathering 40+ Black-led and Black-serving organizations in Springfield, IL during legislative sessions to discuss the federal data crisis. The Data Disaggregation in Illinois film tells the story of this work, exploring how our communities are strategizing to combat federal data erasure.

Our film screening and Q&A will take place this Sunday, March 29th from 11:30am - 1:00pm (M Block) at FACETS Theater. You can find the link to grab tickets in our bio. Thank you – and we hope to see you there! 🎬
