Community programming is the cornerstone of the BRC’s work! 🤝🏾 Our Community Workshop Intensive (CWI) series explores how communities can use research & data to promote civic participation. Take a look at this West Garfield Park workshop from last year to see some of the discussions we have in-session.

From March - June 2026, we hosted programming for Chicago’s Black and Brown students aged 16-24 to teach them research and data skills. Instructional modules covered the topics of radical data literacy, misinformation & disinformation,understanding and responsibly using AI, and using data to inform community action.

Black Researchers Collective put our new Civic Research Toolkits to the test last week at our “From Data to the Polls” event. During this hands-on evening, we reviewed Chicago voter turnout data, and explored how our toolkits can be used to create civic action ahead of the midterm elections. Our mission at the Black Researchers Collective is to advance racial equity by training and equipping communities with research tools to be more civically engaged and policy-informed. That’s why we’re so excited to announce the release of two new Civic Research Toolkits! 📚📖

These free resources are designed to help community members learn the fundamentals of what it takes to host a focus group, and how to facilitate the BRC’s own Community Coffee Chat model.

On Sunday, June 28th, Black Researchers Collective closed out our pilot Youth Research & Data Justice Academy with a celebratory Academy Community Showcase! At this event, we recapped our 4-module curriculum for our audience, and 50 students presented projects that they completed during program. The projects included presentations that counter misinformation/disinformation in our community, presentations on mapping city indicators to advocate for civic solutions, and demonstrations of live AI applications that students created to solve an issue in their community.

This program was designed for Chicago’s Black and Brown young adults ages 16-24 to learn practical, justice-centered data skills and gain a more critical understanding of technology and AI. Last year, we hosted workshops in South Shore to discuss the education landscape in the community. At the Black Researchers Collective, we use our Community Workshop Intensives as opportunities to teach folks how to use research and data to advocate for community issues that are important to them. At the top of August, we’re kicking off a new Community Workshop Intensive series in South Chicago, where community members will explore how the development of a new quantum data center will impact their environment and overall community wellbeing. On July 22nd, Black Researchers Collective hosted our South Chicago Community Coffee Chat to discuss the development of the new quantum data facility and its impact on the community. The next step in our Pillar 1 curriculum is our South Chicago Community Workshop Intensive seeks to engage a community cohort of folks who are interested in learning about the quantum data center coming to South Chicago and its impact on the community and environment in partnership with Urban Growers Collective.

This workshop series is intended for people who live and/or work in the South Chicago community. Registration ends on Sunday, July 26, 2026 at 11:59pm. Visit the link in our bio to sign up!
