After seeing the Flying Squirrels in Richmond Va, Flat Old Baldy venture down to Wilson, NC to see the new ballpark there, Wilson Ballpark. The Carolina Mudcats moved from Five County Stadium in Zebulon, where they played since 1991, to Wilson to become the Warbirds. The Warbirds are the Single A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers in the Carolina League. The name is derived from vintage military aircraft (“warbirds”). FOB learned more about the team and stadium from Wilt the Warbird. Behind the seating on the Third Base side of the infield into Left Field is an 80-room hotel. Looking past the outfield wall fans can see the whirligigs of former pilot Vollis Simpson. FOB recommends visiting Wilson Ballpark and Whirligig Park the next time you are in Wilson.

While on Prince Edward Island, Flat Old Baldy visited the Acadian Museum and the Canadian Potato Museum. The Acadian Museum explains the coming of the people from France to North America, their exportation back to France and return to become a proud part of Canadian society. Their culture has thrived with newspapers and celebrations. The Potato Museum is bigger and better than the Museum in Blackfoot ID. It traces the development of the potato into European Culture, has a room of potato harvesting equipment, displays on types of potatoes as well as usages. PEI grows 17.3% of Canadian potatoes and is known as a premier potato region with iron-rich red soils ideally suited for table and seed crops. FOB advises a visit to these museums next time you are on the Island.

At the Richmond Flying Squirrels game, Flat Old Baldy meet up with Karl Rhodes. They enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner and a fun ballgame. Karl has been a writer, editor and researcher for over 40 years. He worked for Media General, the University of Richmond, and the Federal Reserve Bank. He published a fact-based novel about his great-great-grandmother, Peggy Rhodes, who ran a depot on the unionist underground railroad for Mennonites and Dunkers who refused to fight in the Civil War, titled Peggy’s War. He currently serves on the Board of the Society for Women and the Civil War and as the editor of their newsletter The Calling Card. FOB and Karl traded stories of Civil War adventures around the Mid-Atlantic region and some baseball talk. FOB wished Karl a grand summer and hopes their paths will cross again soon.

Flat Old Baldy was happy to visit Steve Wright to present him with his 40-year pin. This is the second 40-year pin he presented this year (Don Wiles in January). Steve is looking better after his recent medical challenges. Steve served at least four terms as president in the first 30 years. He is from Silver Bay, MN, worked over 25 years in the history field with the Park Service, served as Curator of Collections at the Civil War Library and Museum on Pine Street, a Librarian with the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Secretary-Treasurer of AFSCME Local 2187, District Council 47. He enjoyed traveling to historic site in the West and in the Pacific. He wrote several books and many articles for various history organizations. Steve’s profile was published in the November 2010 newsletter, review it to learn more about him. Steve told FOB he is looking forward to the 50th anniversary celebration next year. He has many memories of the round table and is eager to share them with the planning committee and the attendees of the event next April. He encouraged all long-term members to share stories with the planning team so the 50th event can be great. FOB thanked him for his service to OB CWRT and the history Community and wished him success in his continued rehab.

Flat Old Baldy cruised down to Richmond, VA to visit CarMax Park, the new home of the Flying Squirrels. The Squirrels are the Double A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants in the Eastern League. CarMax Park was built next to the previous stadium, The Diamond. The new ballpark cost $110 million. The Squirrels moved to the Diamond in 2010 from Norwich, CN a year after the Richmond Braves departed for Lawrenceville, GA to become the Gwinnett Stripers. FOB met up with Nutzy to discuss the new ballpark and how the team was adjusting to it. The Squirrels hold the current record for the longest distance from their major league affiliate, at 2,872.5 miles from Oracle Park. The environment was pleasant and fun. Stop by when cruising through Richmond.

When on a gallop around the Atlantic Provinces, Flat Old Baldy went up Signal Hill in St. John’s, Newfoundland to see Cabot Tower. Signal Hill has a long and interesting history. Overlooking the Narrows, the only entrance to the harbour, fortifications date back to the mid-17th century. The final battle of the Seven Years' War in North America was fought there in 1762. Construction of Cabot Tower begun in 1898, to commemorate both Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's (Giovanni Caboto) voyage to the New World. Cabot Tower is an example of late-Gothic Revival style. It is built of irregularly coursed red sandstone. In 1901, Marconi received the first trans-Atlantic wireless message near the tower. When you visit St. John’s, FOB recommends a visit to Signal Hill to get a good view of the area and a stop at the Johnson Geo Centere.
