Old Baldy Civil War Round Table

Flat Old Baldy and several members represented the Round Table at the Major Octavius V. Catto Honor Ceremony at Catto Monument at the South Front of Philadelphia City Hall. The day was the 155th Anniversary of the Assassination of Major Catto. He was killed protecting members of the Black community in Philadelphia on Election Day. Attendees included military units, period civilians, veterans and heritage groups. Member present were Mary Wible, Ted Leventhal, Past President Rich Jankowski and Paul Prentiss. Friends of Old Baldy there were John Voris, Albert El, Michael Wunch, and Andy Waskie. Ted took photos that will be in the November newsletter. The event included speeches, wreath-laying and a Color Guard. The supporters of the event included the Union League, the Catto Society, the Ben Franklin Post #105 of the American Legion, the General Meade Society and Temple University African American Studies Department. Member Paul Prentiss placed the wreath for Post #405. After the ceremony, a luncheon was held at the Union League to award the Catto medal.

Flat Old Baldy welcomed Scott Mingus to the September meeting. Scott is a friend of the Round Table, having visited at least five times in the last dozen years. Scott is from the York County, PA area. Scott has several direct ancestors who served in the Union Army. On this visit he spoke on the ‘March to Gettysburg.’ It is from a book he teamed up with Eric Wittenberg to write about the opening moves of the Campaign. After the Question-and-Answer Period, Scott gave a teaser performance on Civil War Gaming saying he would be glad to return next year to give the full presentation. Flat Old Baldy met up with Ellen Higgins at the picnic to present her with her 5-year pin. Ellen is a retired Math teacher and school sports official, who now resides in Ocean City. She was introduced to the OB CWRT by Walt Lafty when researching her ancestors who fought in the Civil War. She is involved in many Civil War–related organizations, like Dames of the Loyal Legion of the United States of America, the Women’s Relief Corps and the National Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and is a past national president of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. During the Midwest summer ballpark tour, Flat Old Baldy went to League Stadium in Huntingtonburg, IN to see a Dubious County Bombers game. The Bombers are in the Prospect League, a summer college league with 20 teams across seven States. This is the Bombers third year in the League. League Stadium was originally built in 1894 and renovated in 1991 to serve as the home of the Rockford Peaches in the movie A League of Their Own. It was also used in 1995 as the set of Soul of the Game. The outfield wall has advertisements from the 1940’s and the Peaches Team Bus is outside the Stadium. FOB visited the museum to the movie under that stands and posed with the ushers, who wear the uniforms of the Peaches. For fans of the movie, FOB highly recommends a visit the next time you are in southern Indiana.

At the Old Baldy CWRT picnic at Red Bank Park, Flat Old Baldy share time with the 20 members and guests who attended. Thanks to Dave Gilson for staffing the grill and each person who contributed to the event. The weather was right for a mid-September day. The crew was serenaded by a bag piper by the river. President Calvi Kinsel chatted with those present, listening their concerns. Projects were discussed for next year’s 50th anniversary celebration, folks learned about each other and a group photo was taken to update the heading of the OB page. Everyone recommended continuing this tradition next year and hoping to see more people there.

While touring in North Carolina, Flat Old Baldy visited the Eastern Cabarrus History Society in Mt. Pleasant, NC. It is housed in main building of the former Mt. Pleasant Collegiate Institute. Rooms in the museum include one about the school, the local textile industry, the Native Americans in the area, clothing from the last 200 years, the dry goods store, residents who answered the call to War in the last 100 years, and the local culture. In the Civil War room FOB reviewed several exhibits that explained the role of local residents in the War, where local units fought, and the War from the perspective of citizens in the area during that period. FOB found the museum to be worth a stop the next time you are in the Charlotte area.

12th New Jersey has a monument honoring their camp of instruction. Fred Mossbrucker a member of our company K replaced the long standing tattered flag located in Woodbury NJ. Three cheers to Fred!

At the Memorial Day event in Norristown, Flat Old Baldy welcomed Craig Bird to the Round Table. Craig was born in Kansas, grew up in Arizona and traveled the world in the U. S. Army. He now resides in West Norriton. His attraction to the Civil War began when he was young, beginning his interest in the human side of the War. He serves in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (Baker-Fisher Camp No. 101) and at Montgomery Cemetery in Norristown. FOB thanked Craig for his serve to the nation and to Civil War History community and for his support of the Round Table.
