What can we say except…THANK YOU!

Moana JR. closed yesterday after an exceptional 3-show run. Over 1,100 patrons got to experience this magical journey.

Thank you to the amazingly talented cast, all of whom positively shined on stage. The commitment, dedication and hard work is outstanding.

Thank you to the backstage crew who hustles in the wings to ensure the cast is safe and ready for their spotlight. Their stage transformations were truly something to behold.

Thank you to the parent volunteers who ensured the show ran smoothly. With 64 young actors in the dressing rooms, this was no small feat!

Thank you to the parents and loved ones who ensured their children were on time and prepared for rehearsals and shows.

Thank you to the Cheboygan Area Arts Council for the continued support of the Summer Youth Theater program. Having a 3-week residency at the Opera House is no small ask and we appreciate the opportunity for our actors to have such an in-depth experience with Jewel of the North.

Thank you to the creative team for trusting the process and lending their precious time to make Moana JR. come to life. Countless hours were donated to turn abstract concepts into reality. There are so many pieces to the puzzle: lights, costumes, music, sound, sets, dance, acting. This is not a one-person job. The creative talent within this team is unparalleled.

Thank you to the community for showing up and supporting all the kids involved with this show. We sincerely hope you enjoyed your time at the theater and we hope you will be back for more shows in the future! There’s just no telling how far these kids will go…

Today is a great day for string music in Cheboygan, since the Grammy-winning Parker Quartet (pictured here on tour in Hawaii) will be performing at the Opera House -- Sunday, June 21, 7:30pm! Joining them will be the superb cellist Raman Ramakrishnan, for a performance of Schubert's "Cello Quintet".

Composed when Schubert was just 31 years old, but 2 months before his death, the String Quintet in C major sat unpublished for over 20 years. Finally performed in 1850, it is still regarded as one of the finest works in the chamber music repertoire.

Tonight's concert is an absolutely unique experience to hear this amazing piece (as well as works by Beethoven and Paul Wiancko) performed live, by one of our country's best quartets, in the setting of the Opera House.

Tickets are $30 / $25 for Veterans / and FREE for students. You can purchase them online, over the phone (231-627-5841) or right at the door.

The Arts & Culture Summer Collective featuring: The historic Cheboygan Opera House, the Jewel of the North, is managed by the Cheboygan Area Arts Council.

The Opera House, originally constructed in 1877, played an important role in the history of the colorful lumbering era in Northern Michigan. Twice ravaged by fires and rebuilt in 1888 and 1903, the facility now harmoniously houses its original combination of City Hall, Police Department, Fire Department and the 582 seat Opera House. In 1984, after having been closed for some twenty years, the elegantly restored Opera House re-opened its doors to the public once more. Managed by the Cheboygan Area Arts Council, with the support of The Michigan Arts and Culture Council, this acoustically superb, Victorian theater has become the focal point for entertainment and the performing arts in the Straits of Mackinaw area and beyond.

A new art exhibit is now open at the Opera House! The exhibit features the work of the late Rosemary Gould, an artist and art professor who was born in Detroit and summered in the Cheboygan area.

The exhibit can be viewed in the Main Floor lobby of the Opera House during Box Office hours (Tuesday-Friday, 12:00-4:00) and during Opera House events.

Thematically, Rosemary’s art always reflected the physical, cultural, and natural world where she was living and traveling at the time. Her work demonstrates a love of nature and natural forms and a passion for ethnic and geographic folklore, such as the Scandinavian and Hmong influences on the Minnesota prairie, the Mississippi culture of Southeast Missouri, Appalachian folk culture, and the Anishinaabe First Nations people of Northern Michigan with whom she always felt a particular sense of solidarity.

While much of her work - not fully represented here - was in oil painting, pencil drawings, printing, and watercolor, in her professional life, she focused on metalsmithing and fibers, and later in her career, papermaking. The physical form of her work ranged from small sculptural forms, wearable art (jewelry), and bookbinding.

This retrospective exhibit of Rosemary Gould will be on display through November. We hope to feature other regional artists on a rotating basis beginning in 2027.
