2026 is starting off in the best possible way.

Many will remember Baby Alexa. Orphaned at about 10 months old a few years ago after her mother was poached, Alexa endured significant stress and developed colic and inappetence following her rescue.
An endoscopy revealed that she suffered from stress-induced gastric ulcers, with sores extending up into her esophagus and mouth. Intensive treatment began immediately, and over time, Alexa began to heal—both physically and emotionally.

However, this is not a throwback post about Alexa; it is a celebration.

A Young Rhino's First Dehorning
This image depicts the dehorning of a young rhino in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, part of a broader dehorning effort supported by the Rhino Recovery Fund this year. It's the first time this animal’s horn has been cut — a somber but necessary step to reduce poaching risks.
During this operation, both black and white rhinos were dehorned, each requiring different handling approaches. White rhinos, being more placid and social grazers, tend to remain calmer after immobilization. Black rhinos, by contrast, are notoriously unpredictable and highly aggressive browsers, which makes them more prone to charge when stressed. For this reason, reversing the anesthetic in black rhinos is considered a high-pressure stage of the procedure: they often wake abruptly and run at the first unnatural sight, meaning field teams must vacate the area quickly after the reversal is administered, identifying nearby trees as potential escape places from an incoming charge, until the helicopter arrives back to pick them up.
Despite the inherent challenges and risks, the field teams’ expertise and coordination are evident throughout the entire operation, ensuring the animals’ safety and well-being remain the priority. Once the dehorning process is completed, the rhinos are closely monitored as they recover, and the removed horns are cataloged and secured to prevent them from entering illegal markets. This proactive approach, while emotionally difficult, represents a critical strategy in the ongoing fight to protect rhinos from the persistent threat of poaching, giving these remarkable animals a better chance at survival in their natural habitat.

This heartbreaking photo shows the caretaker of Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino, comforting him in his final moments.
After years of protection from poachers, Sudan’s passing in 2018 marked the extinction of his kind.
Only two females remain, and scientists are racing to preserve the species through IVF — a desperate attempt to undo what humanity destroyed.
