Did you know? The lake sturgeon was around in the time of the dinosaurs!

Join us at the library a month from today on Wednesday, June 24th, at 6:00pm to learn more about the "living fossil" swimming in our waters, the lake sturgeon. Local Expert Brenda Archambo will be here to tell us all about them, their history, and their important role in the ecosystem.

As founder, past president, and active participant in the lack Lake chapter of "Sturgeon for Tomorrow," Brenda has a wealth of experience to share about what our community can do to help ensure Lake Sturgeon can thrive once again.

"Sturgeon Among Us" is suitable for all ages. The presentation will take place in the Linda Widrig Neuss Room of our fully accessible lower level Center for Community Programs. There is no cost to attend, and all are welcome.

Sturgeon made it through the dinosaur extinctions, all the way through Lake Erie being declared dead in the 1960s, to now. But they need our help. In this episode, we look at two restoration efforts to ensure lake sturgeon are here for future generations.

Exciting news from Mr. Huhta’s Biology class! 🎉🐟

One of our Sturgeon in the Classroom fish has officially been reported as FOUND!

“Bubbles” — a lake sturgeon raised by Bloomfield Hills High School students and released at the 2022 Blue Water Sturgeon Festival — was recently recaptured and released by an angler in the North Channel of the St. Clair River.

According to DNR Fisheries Biologist Andrew S. Briggs:

“We had an angler report recapturing a Sturgeon in the Classroom fish! This is the first Sturgeon in the Classroom fish we have had reported as recaptured in the St. Clair River. ‘Bubbles’ (PIT tag 989001039667568) was raised by Bloomfield Hills High School and released in 2022 at the Blue Water Sturgeon Festival and reported by an angler in our Angler Diary Program. The angler caught and released Bubbles in the North Channel of the St. Clair River on October 25, 2025 and measured it at 28.25 inches long.”

The "Sturgeon in the Classroom" program in Michigan engages students in raising juvenile lake sturgeon, a threatened species, during the school year to foster conservation stewardship. Mr. Huhta and his class have raised a sturgeon every year since 2015. This year's class sturgeon, Fin Diesel, is due to be released June 6 at the 2026 Blue Water Sturgeon Festival.

What an amazing example of conservation, science, and student impact in action! 💙

Whiskers is almost ready for release! Thanks to a partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan State University, our fishy friend now has an acoustic tracker that will help researchers follow their journey in the wild.

Doug Larson from the Black River Sturgeon Rearing Facility safely implanted the tracker while Whiskers was under anesthesia. After a smooth recovery, Whiskers is back in the tank and nearly ready for release day!

Shout out to these scouts who were able to participate in the Sturgeon For Tomorrow event this past weekend. They participated in a conservation project, pulling several truck loads of trash out of the woods!

This is your friendly reminder that this Saturday, September 13th, 2025, is LTBB’s annual Nmé Celebration and Release! This wonderful community event will take place in Wolverine at the Sturgeon River Campground Pavilion, from Noon until 2:00pm. Together, with Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, we will have a community cookout lunch featuring generous donations from area businesses such as Plath’s Meats, The Thirsty Sturgeon, and Grain Train! Attendees can learn about the work LTBB and TOMWC are doing in our community, learn about these magnificent fish and the watershed they live in, and will be given the chance to release a juvenile Nmé into the Sturgeon River! Over 200 fish are ready to be released; please join us as we celebrate these amazing fish and wish them well as they begin their life’s journey. We hope to see you there!
