Regular watering is a simple measure to improve the resilience of recently planted trees. In warmer months, dry weather increases trees’ risk of drought and their vulnerability to insects. This type of stress is detrimental to trees’ survival against disease and pests and to their growth. Without water, trees cannot produce energy (sugar) through a process called photosynthesis.

Without trees, our neighborhoods and environments may be exposed to higher heat indexes without shade, an influx of particulate matter without our natural filtration, an inflow of stormwater pollution without our natural sponges, and an abundance of carbon dioxide without our natural carbon capturer.

To properly take care of trees, they need to be watered at least once a week if less than an inch of rain falls. Recently planted trees need to be watered two to three times a week in warmer months. Gradually water the trees, allowing water to soak into the soil and prevent water runoff. A garden hose or a five-gallon bucket with holes drilled into the bottom can be utilized. Water sourced from a rain barrel can also be used.

If you’re interested in adding a rain barrel to your home, consider joining us at an upcoming rain barrel workshop this spring. Most workshops are full, but there's still room in Williamsburg and Nelson County this May!
