Charlottesville Ballet A professional ballet company, dance academy, and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving Central VA

Founded in 2007 with a unique mission for dancer wellness, Charlottesville Ballet is the only full time professional dance company in the Charlottesville area. Co-Founders Sara Clayborne and Emily Hartka are committed to elevating professional ballet with a healthy working environment for the artists. The professional company is comprised of dancers from all over the United States and abroad– from Virginia to California to Japan. Charlottesville Ballet’s Trainee Program welcomes additional dancers as they transition from advanced students into professional artists. Charlottesville Ballet Academy (CBA), the official training school of Charlottesville Ballet, opened in July 2011 and is a nonprofit center for dance education serving over 700 students throughout the Central Virginia. CBA offers training in all dance genres for ages 1.5 through adult and offers performance opportunities for young dancers alongside the professional company. Chance To Dance (C2D) is an after-school outreach program for grades K-5 that gives underserved children a hands-on experience with the arts. The Ballet partners with local public schools in both Charlottesville City and Albemarle County and students are selected to receive lifetime scholarships to train at CBA. Charlottesville Ballet’s professional company presents performances and events in Charlottesville, in Lynchburg as Resident Dance Company at the Academy Center of the Arts, and across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

✨ Meet Mary Hein, one of the choreographers of Charlottesville Ballet’s "Salute"! ✨

A former Charlottesville Ballet Company Artist, Mary Hein has continued to make her mark as a choreographer with works created for both Charlottesville Ballet’s professional dancers and CBA students.
In "Salute," Mary brings three pieces to the stage: 'Ragtime,' 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,' and 'A Military Fanfare' — each contributing to this powerful celebration of music, dance, honor, and remembrance.
Mary’s work with Charlottesville Ballet's 19th season continues this December, with her restaging of the party and battle scenes for our production of "The Nutcracker."

🎹 Happy World Ballet Pianists Day to our wonderful pianists, Katherine Nies and Tai Carr!
Katherine Nies is a pianist, composer, and storyteller whose work blends jazz, classical, and folk traditions. Classically trained, she has collaborated with acclaimed artists and performed at Carnegie Hall. Her work with Charlottesville Ballet includes "Dancing Through the Looking Glass," "RBG," and "Sorrowful Songs." Katherine has provided live musical accompaniment for our professional company artists for 12 years!
Tai Carr is a Charlottesville-based musician with a diverse musical background spanning piano, harp, and several other instruments. He has studied classical, blues, pop, and Cape Breton styles and performed with the Blue Ridge Irish Music School. Tai brings his musical talents to the studio as an accompanist for Charlottesville Ballet Academy (CBA) students.
We’re grateful to Katherine and Tai for supporting our dancers at every stage, bringing music to life in the studio and inspiring artistry through movement! 🎶

We’re thrilled to bring "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" back to the stage for this year’s "Salute"! 🎶
Choreographed by Mary Hein, this energetic favorite captures the buoyant optimism, camaraderie, and infectious rhythm of an era when music and dance helped lift spirits during World War II.
Originally made famous by the Andrews Sisters in 1941, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" became an iconic morale-boosting song, turning a military trumpet call into a swinging celebration. Mary’s choreography brings that same playful energy and sense of camaraderie to the stage.
We can’t wait to see Gabriella Fedewa, Zaiah Gray, Eden Heille, and Yui Kaito bring this crowd favorite back to life!

Say hello to Heather Rogers, Charlottesville Ballet Academy’s Strategic Advisor! ✨

Heather’s dance journey began at the age of four in Ridge Manor, FL, before continuing her training with South Georgia Performing Arts, South Georgia Ballet, and Charlottesville’s Wilson School of Dance. After two seasons as an Apprentice with Charlottesville Ballet, she joined the faculty when Charlottesville Ballet Academy opened its doors in 2011.

An American Ballet Theatre Certified Teacher, Heather has completed the ABT National Training Curriculum through Level 5 and Boston Ballet’s Adaptive Dance Teacher Training. She also helped launch Charlottesville Ballet’s Adaptive Dance program in 2021, expanding access to dance throughout our community.

After serving as CBA Principal, Heather transitioned into her current role as Strategic Advisor in 2025, where she continues to shape the future of our academy with her expertise, leadership, and unwavering dedication to our students and mission. 💜🩰
