At The Duke Endowment, philanthropy entails far more than simply writing checks and hoping for the best. We will always use internal and/or external evaluation to assess the effectiveness of our grantmaking. We always want to know how grant-funded projects are faring, because we want to continuously learn and improve. In the end, our goal isn’t simply to feel good about giving money away.

Our goal is to make a difference for the people of the Carolinas.

"Writing checks is the easy part of philanthropy. The harder challenge is producing measurable improvement in people’s lives.

Our mission, laid out a century ago by James B. Duke, is to improve life for the people and communities of the Carolinas through grantmaking. Given the many challenges across our two states, from low college graduation rates to high prevalence of preventable illness, the work before us requires far more than generosity and good intentions."

For more than a year, United Methodist ministers at rural churches have also worked as part-time chaplains at local correctional facilities and said the program fills critical gaps in spiritual care for incarcerated people.

The Duke Endowment has funded prison chaplains, who also guide congregations at rural United Methodist churches, in four North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections facilities. The program helps serve a critical function in facilities across the state, which have historically struggled with chaplain staffing levels as a result of budget woes.

A $4.4 million, three-year grant from The Duke Endowment will help rural and resource-limited clinics and hospitals safely and effectively use health-related AI tools.

The grant aids The North Carolina Collaborative Health AI Network (NC CHAIN), which aims to support health systems, community clinics, critical access hospitals and other health care organizations as they navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
