Residents in Sugar Creek and Hidden Valley say the current plan does not address their needs, with the Hidden Valley Community Association pushing for a station on West Craighead Road. Our take: The more access, the better.

Charlotte's transit board spent hours weighing station additions, funding risk, and where the Red Line commuter rail should ultimately end.

Big news: we've extended the deadline! You now have until Friday, August 21 to apply for a Community Transit Engagement Stipend.

Sustain Charlotte is offering $1,000–$3,000 stipends to support neighborhood-led conversations and outreach in low- to moderate-income areas across Mecklenburg County — helping shape the future of transit, including buses, rail, and special transportation services.

The application only takes 15–20 minutes, and funds can go toward community gatherings, translation, childcare, transportation to meetings, or whatever creative approach works best for your neighborhood.

If your community has historically been left out of transit decisions, we especially encourage you to apply. This extension is your chance to make sure your neighborhood's voice is heard.

Sustain Charlotte agrees with Matthews' town attorney on this one. 👏

At this week's Matthews Town Council meeting, Town Attorney Daniel Peterson didn't mince words about the state legislation targeting members of the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization who voted to rescind support for the I-77 South toll lane project.

Peterson called the legislation what it is: an attempt to punish local governments for listening to their residents — and warned it's unconstitutional, violates federal transportation law, and sets a dangerous precedent that could happen to any community, not just Mecklenburg.

Thank you, Daniel, for speaking up on behalf of Mecklenburg County residents and for defending the right of local elected bodies to represent their communities without fear of retaliation from Raleigh.
This isn't just a Mecklenburg issue. It's a question of whether local democracy means anything when it conflicts with powerful interests at the state level.

Charlotte City Council is about to revisit a decision they already made. Monday at 5 p.m., the Transportation, Planning & Development Committee meets to discuss reversing Council's previous vote to withdraw support for the I-77 South Toll Lanes.

We need Council to stand firm.

Two ways to speak up before then:

Email Council. Tell them Charlotte residents want them to stick with their original vote and keep opposing the toll lanes proposal. (Click the link to email them directly.)

Show up Monday. The meeting is at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. 4th Street, Room 267, at 5 p.m. Even if you're not planning to speak, being in the room matters. It tells Council that Charlotte is paying attention.

We'll have a small supply of signs on hand, but you're welcome to bring your own. Something as simple as "NO on 77!" gets the point across.

Charlotte needs transportation investments that connect our communities, not ones that carve them up and leave future generations holding the bill.

Log rides, win prizes. Fresh Air Rides starts Monday, August 3 -- and if you participate, you could win prizes!

Employees from organizations across the Charlotte region are making efforts to improve local air quality this month. The goal is to make small changes that, collectively, add up to make a difference.

This is great! We're grateful to community members like Bethanie Johnson and Charlotte Cadieux for stepping up and providing this needed (and honestly super cool) service!

Ten years ago, CLT Bike Camp launched with just two camps that didn't fill up. 🚲

Today, the program offers six camps for riders of all skill levels, helping kids build confidence on two wheels while learning the rules of the road. Through rides, games and safety drills, campers gain more than biking skills — they gain independence, confidence and a love for the outdoors.

Charlotte deserves community investment because our neighborhoods deserve it. That investment should not depend on accepting a highway project that many residents and elected leaders have already rejected.

NCDOT Secretary Johnson's July 28 letter on the I-77 South toll lanes project outlines real investments in neighborhood reconnection, affordable housing, workforce development, and safer streets. We welcome those commitments. The core transportation proposal remains the same, with permanent toll lanes and an elevated highway design still at the center of the plan.

Along with Action NC and the McCrorey Heights Neighborhood Association, we are urging City Council to stand by its earlier decision and continue pursuing transportation solutions that serve Charlotte's long-term future.
