What is Mishpat? (מִשְׁפָּט)

Mishpat is the Hebrew word in the Old Testament that we translate as “justice.” It speaks to the sense that there’s a rightness and wrongness in the world.

Mishpat makes judgments about what is wrong and helps restore balance. However, this biblical understanding of justice includes mercy, humility, and love.

It is restorative, involves making other people’s problems my problems and means that my flourishing is dependent on the flourishing of others, which is true humility.

Philippians 2:3-5 tells us to “Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”

What is a Biblical definition of Justice?

The biblical definition of justice is closely tied to the character and nature of God. In the Bible, justice refers to the quality of being fair, impartial, and righteous, and it is a key component of God’s nature and his relationship with humanity. Justice is reflected in God’s expectations for his people. In Micah 6:8, the prophet says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” In other words, God calls his people to act justly, to show mercy and kindness, and to live in humble obedience to him. We are to repair the harm caused by a crime or wrongdoing, emphasizing the importance of addressing the needs of the victim, as well as rehabilitating the offender and restoring relationships between all parties involved.

Eastertide is a confusing season. When we come to Pentecost, and enter ordinary time, we can feel even more lost in waiting. The celebrations have ended, the Spirit is with us, but the Son has ascended. The new heaven and the new earth is not here. We are in the “not yet” zone of healing, restoration, and shalom. But we are prophetically living out many “alreadys.”

At M25i, we believe that in the waiting we get to live out the kingdom of God now. We know it when we glimpse it, taste it, feel it, hear it. But we are definitely still waiting. And we are a little impatient.

How do YOU wait well for Christ while actively offering the “alreadys” of His kingdom of love?
