❤️ STORYBOOK TREE OF HOPE ❤️

Look at our tree! And more importantly, look at all those empty paw prints just waiting for a name! 🐾

We wanted to find a special way to recognize the people who make what we do at Storybook Rescues possible. Not just those who give once, but the wonderful people who support us month after month, year after year, the businesses that step up when we need help, and those who make donations in memory or honor of someone they love.

Every name on this tree represents someone who has made a difference in the life of an animal. Some of those animals needed medical care, some needed a safe place to land, some were tiny babies fighting to survive, and others simply needed someone to care enough to give them a chance.

And behind every one of those stories are people like YOU.

I wish everyone could see what we see. The animals that arrive frightened, hungry, sick, or completely helpless. The hours spent caring for them, the vet bills, the heartbreak, and thankfully, the wonderful moments when everything we’ve worked for finally comes together.

We could never do this without the people whose names are already hanging on those branches. And I can’t begin to tell you how grateful we are.

But take another look at our tree. See all those empty paws?

They’re waiting for YOU! ❤️

We aren’t asking you to give a certain amount. Every donation, regardless of size, helps us continue doing what we do. Whether you give once, every month, in memory of a beloved pet, or simply because you believe animals deserve a second chance, we’d love to add your name to our tree.

And as the donations come in, we’ll keep adding names and sharing our growing tree with everyone!

🐾 Help us fill those empty paws! There’s always room for one more on the Storybook Tree of Hope!

You can make a donation through our Giving Fund here:

PLEASE be sure to include your name with your donation! We receive anonymous donations and have no way of knowing who to thank or whose name to add to the tree. If your donation comes through anonymously, please message us so we can recognize you!

If you prefer to mail a check, make it payable to Storybook Rescues and message us for our mailing address.

🎃🍂 DON’T THROW AWAY THOSE PUMPKINS AND STRAW! 🍂🎃

It’s fall festival season, and before long, all those wonderful scarecrows, pumpkins and bales of straw will be coming down.

But what happens to everything afterward?

What might be trash to someone else can be a treasure to an animal! ❤️

Straw makes wonderful bedding and helps keep outdoor animals warm and dry during the colder months. And chickens and pigs absolutely LOVE pumpkins!

I’m hoping some of you might have connections with pumpkin patches, fall festivals, churches, schools, businesses or anyone who puts on these wonderful autumn displays.

If you know someone who will have leftover straw, hay or pumpkins when their events are over, PLEASE reach out!

We could certainly put some of it to good use, and if there’s more than we can use, I would love to help connect it with other local farms, rescues and animal owners who could benefit.

Of course, everything needs to be clean, free of mold and safe for the animals.

Rather than filling dumpsters, let’s put some of that fall fun to work helping animals!

Please share this post! You never know who might have just the connection we’re looking for! 🐷🐓🐴❤️

OH. MY. KITTEN. 😻 Meet Walter & Whopper.

These two little guys are only about 6 weeks old, and yes… they really are this cute.

🤎 WALTER is the sweet, sensitive one. He is very cuddly once he feels safe, but he’s a little shy at first and needs a minute to decide you’re worthy of his affection. 😂 Walter is going to be perfect for a calm, patient person who will give him the time to settle in and then enjoy all the snuggles that follow.

💙 WHOPPER is… well… Whopper. 😂 He is INSANE, loving, attention-driven and absolutely convinced that the world revolves around him. He wants love, he wants attention, and preferably he wants it RIGHT NOW. Those bright blue eyes and that longer fluffy coat don’t exactly hurt his chances either. He is going to make somebody an absolutely wonderful, entertaining little companion.

They are still too little to be neutered, so it will be a few weeks before they are ready to go home.

BUT HERE’S THE IMPORTANT PART…

Walter and Whopper are not the only ones.

Not even close.

We have LOTS of kittens. Lots. Different colors, personalities, ages and levels of kitten insanity. 😹

So if you have even been thinking about adding a kitten to your family, GET YOUR APPLICATION IN NOW.

An approved application does not obligate you to adopt anyone. It simply means that when you see the one and fall hopelessly in love, you’re already approved and ready.

Because please don’t get mad at us when somebody else gets the kitten you wanted because they already had an approved application on file! 😂

Our kittens go home spayed or neutered, microchipped, dewormed and with age-appropriate vaccines.

So go ahead… zoom in on those faces one more time.

And then fill out the application. 😻

This picture should be a greeting card.
But the story behind it is the stuff rescue nightmares are made of.

Look at those five little faces. Warm, safe, fat-bellied and piled on top of each other without a care in the world.

These are five of the bottle babies being raised by our infamous bottle feeder, Jerri. ❤️

They’re adorable.

They’re also five tiny examples of a problem that is completely out of control.

Right now, Storybook Rescues has 15 bottle babies and more than TWO DOZEN other kittens in our care.

And here I go, climbing back onto my soapbox…

PEOPLE, WE HAVE GOT TO SPAY AND NEUTER. PLEASE.

I am inundated with requests every single day. Kittens found under houses. Kittens dumped on roads. Pregnant cats. Nursing mothers. Litters in barns. Cats that “just showed up.” Cats people can no longer keep.

And we have reached the point where I cannot take in any more animals — EVEN WHEN SOMEONE OFFERS TO FOSTER THEM.

Why?

Because fostering is only the beginning.

Those babies eventually have to be vaccinated, dewormed, spayed or neutered, advertised, taken to adoption events, cared for week after week…and ultimately, they need somewhere to go.

And right now, adoptions are painfully slow.

Some bottle babies Jerri raised last spring only recently got adopted. Think about that. Tiny newborn kittens that required round-the-clock feeding grew up in our rescue and waited well over six months for homes.

Meanwhile, another litter arrives.

Then another.

Then another.

We are not running out of love.

We are running out of homes. Space. Fosters. Money. Hours in the day. And places for these animals to go.

So when you look at this beautiful little pile of kittens, please see more than an adorable Facebook picture.

See 15 bottle babies.

See two dozen-plus other kittens waiting behind them.

See rescuers who are exhausted and still answering the phone.

And please understand that rescue cannot fix this problem simply by taking in more animals.

The only way we ever get ahead of this is to prevent the next litter.

Spay your cats. Neuter your cats. Fix the barn cats. Fix the neighborhood cats. TNR the community cats. Help your neighbor get theirs fixed.

One unplanned litter may look like five precious babies curled together for a photograph.

But multiply that picture by the calls we receive every single day, and suddenly it isn’t cute anymore.

Spay. Neuter. TNR.
Please help us stop the next litter before it is born.

Was today’s adoption event successful?

We adopted ONE kitten.

And we saved EIGHT.

That probably sounds like terrible rescue math. 😂 We worked all day, packed everything up, came home exhausted, and somehow ended the day with seven MORE kittens than we started with.

But this is exactly why I don’t measure the success of these events by how many cats leave in carriers.

A huge part of rescue is networking. It’s meeting people. Educating people. Building relationships. Making people aware of what we do. Finding fosters, bottle feeders, adopters, donors, volunteers, and sometimes simply meeting the exact person you are going to desperately need a few hours later.

Today we met a woman who bottle feeds kittens.

Thank God we did.

Because after I left the event, one of our volunteers contacted me about THREE approximately two-week-old kittens she had found.

Then a family brought us FIVE kittens only about 3½ weeks old.

Eight tiny lives.

Every one of our regular bottle feeders said no.

And I don’t blame them one bit. They are exhausted. We are ALL exhausted.

Bottle feeding is around-the-clock work, and the people who do it over and over again are absolute warriors. There eventually comes a point where your body and your brain simply say, “I cannot take another one.”

But somehow, once again, the pieces came together. Our wonderful vet, Dr. Rachel, helped us find someone willing to take the five babies, and we found help for the others.

Sadly, I didn’t even get pictures of the eight kittens. We were too busy figuring out where they were going and making sure they were safe. The photos in this reel are simply moments from today’s event.

And honestly, that almost proves my point.

What you see at an adoption event is only one tiny piece of rescue.

So yes, only one kitten was adopted today.

But eight more kittens are alive tonight because people connected, talked, helped, shared resources, and figured it out.

That matters.

Could we adopt more kittens if we made them free or almost free?

Probably.

I’m not going to do that.

These animals have already depended on humans to save them once. I want to do everything I reasonably can to make sure their next home is the right home. I will never turn rescue into a numbers game just so we can say we had a bigger adoption day.

And here is the bigger problem we all keep dancing around:

WE CANNOT ADOPT OUR WAY OUT OF THIS.

There are simply too many kittens being born.

The only way we ever make a meaningful dent in this crisis is SPAY AND NEUTER.

That is why TNR matters.
That is why affordable veterinary care matters.
That is why education matters.
That is why networking matters.
And yes, as tired as we all are, that is why these darn events matter too. 😂

So was today successful?

One adoption.
Eight lives saved.
A whole bunch of conversations.
New connections made.
People educated.
And hopefully a few more people understanding what rescue actually looks like behind the cute kitten pictures.

I’ll take that as a win. ❤️

And now I’m going to sit down before somebody hands me another kitten. 😂

BONANZA

Bonanza came to us very broken after years of neglect. I don’t know everything he went through before he got here, but I do know what he had once he arrived. He had years of love. He had safety. He had people who cared about him. And he knew he was finally home.

He never asked for much.

Everyone was always amazed that he made it as long as he did. I wasn’t. Bonanza had the strongest will of any horse, big or small, that I have ever witnessed. That little guy was a fighter.

I knew this day had been coming for a while, but I kept telling myself, “His appetite is GREAT. Not good. GREAT. He’s fine.” And even today, Bonanza ate like a champ.

But over the last three days, something changed. He just couldn’t walk anymore. He wanted to. God, he wanted to. But I could see how painful every step had become.

I asked the universe for a sign that it was time.

And the sign was delivered.

So today I had to do the hardest and most loving thing we can ever do for an animal we love. I had to stop asking him to fight for me.

I want to thank our vet for coming at the last minute and helping Bonanza leave this world peacefully. And thank you, Dale, for helping me find and prepare the perfect resting spot for this tough little horse who deserved nothing less.

I love hard, so I hurt hard. That’s just the deal.

But I also know how incredibly blessed I am to be able to share my life with these animals. To give them love, respect and dignity while they are here, and when the time comes, to love them enough to let them go.

Run free, Bonanza. No more sore feet. No more painful steps. No more fighting.

And when you get wherever you’re going, please tell all those I’ve had the pleasure of loving and spending time with that I said hello. Tell them I still miss them.

Those of us still here are going to miss you too, little man.

No doubt about that. 💔

And what you see in this Reel is only a SMALL sampling!

We currently have a couple dozen kittens ready for adoption, more little ones coming up behind them, and even a very special 10 year old gentleman who is still waiting for someone to realize that kittens aren’t the only ones deserving of a happily ever after.

But before any of these babies can head out into the world, there is a whole lot that has to happen.

You’ll see our infamous Dr. Rachel and her wonderful crew at Oak Grove Vet Clinic getting another group of Storybook babies vetted and ready for their new lives.

You’ll see some very wet little kittens getting baths at the home of our new foster, Tanya Holm. 😂 Those babies are still too young to leave us, but give them a couple of weeks!

You’ll see kittens who are available NOW.

You’ll see a few who have already been adopted.

And then you’ll see LEO. 🧡

Leo is 10 years old and still looking for his person. While everyone is understandably drawn to the babies, I would LOVE to see someone look at that big orange face and decide that Leo’s next chapter should be with them.

Now, if ANY of these faces have you thinking about adoption, please listen to me:

GET YOUR APPLICATION IN NOW!

Submitting an application does NOT commit you to adopting.

It simply gets you approved and ready.

We give first priority to completed and approved applications, and we have had people miss out on the kitten they fell in love with because someone else already had an approved application on file.

Don’t wait until you see “THE ONE.” 😂

Get approved first. Then you can fall in love.

THE APPLICATION IS IN THE COMMENTS.

Complete it and email it to:

[email protected]

And don’t let distance automatically stop you from applying. We can arrange transport for a fee. If you fall in love with one of our cats, reach out and let’s see what we can work out.

And while all these beautiful faces make great pictures, rescue continues behind the scenes every single day. We are still doing TNR, distributing donated food, helping people who cannot afford medical care for beloved pets, answering calls, supporting fosters and handling plenty of things that either don’t get photographed or simply aren’t ours to share publicly.

There is never enough time to document it all.

But today I DO have pictures.

And boy, do I have KITTENS! 😂❤️🐾

A couple dozen are ready right now.

And this is only a sampling.

HERE WE GO AGAIN…

Rescue doesn’t recognize a holiday, a weekend, or the time of day.

When people find orphaned kittens, they panic. And as always, we try to help wherever we can.

These tiny babies came to us with their umbilical cords still attached. That means they are only days old and completely dependent on someone for everything: warmth, feeding around the clock, stimulation to go to the bathroom, monitoring their weight, and watching constantly for the slightest sign that something is wrong.

I called Jerri, one of our true and trusted bottle feeders, and once again she stepped up to the plate.

These babies have a long road ahead of them. The reality is that neonatal kittens this young don’t always have good odds. I hate even saying that, but it’s true. And if anyone can get these little ones through it, it’s Jerri. We are incredibly lucky to have her.

I could do an entire post about Jerri with pictures of babies just like these that she has saved, and I definitely will.

But today I want to talk about SPAYING AND NEUTERING. AGAIN.

Because so much of this madness is preventable.

Somewhere there is very likely a mama cat who just gave birth and is now without her babies. And unless she is spayed, she can become pregnant again. Then there will be another litter. And another. And the cycle just keeps going.

I CAN’T FIX STUPID, BUT I CAN FIX THEIR PETS!!! 😂

Come on, people. FIX YOUR ANIMALS.

There are low-cost spay/neuter programs, vouchers, clinics and, in some areas, even FREE options. Cost does not always have to be the barrier people think it is.

If you need help finding affordable spay/neuter, contact us. If we can’t help directly, we will do our best to point you toward someone who can.

Because bottle feeding newborn kittens around the clock is wonderful when it saves a life.

But preventing them from being orphaned, abandoned, dumped or born into an already overwhelmed population in the first place?

THAT’S EVEN BETTER.
