Ever wonder how Fantasy of Lights began?

Who had the idea? How did it come together? And how did one Christmas celebration grow into a tradition Sealy has carried forward for 40 years?

As we prepare for the 40th Annual Fantasy of Lights, we’re going back to the beginning and sharing the story of how it all started.

Here’s the story.

In 1987, Fantasy of Lights began with an idea…

Carolyn Zapalac had seen an article in Texas Highways about a Christmas park in Wichita Falls that had become a holiday attraction, and she brought the idea to Mayor Betty Reinbeck. The thought was simple, but powerful: Sealy could do something like that too.

Mayor Reinbeck believed Sealy not only could do it – She believed Sealy should do it. But from the very beginning, the vision was never for one person, one group, or one organization to carry it alone. It was meant to be a community effort.

From that idea, Citizens United for Sealy called on businesses, churches, civic groups, organizations, families, and volunteers to come together and help make Sealy shine for the holidays. And the community answered.

Within weeks, the Sealy Chamber of Commerce and the Sealy Downtown Association both agreed to be part of the collaboration with Citizens United for Sealy. Businesses, organizations, churches, civic groups, and residents began finding ways to participate, decorate, volunteer, and help bring the vision to life.

Floats were decorated. Displays were created. Businesses dressed up their storefronts. Families decorated their homes and yards. Organizations found their place in the celebration. Volunteers stepped forward. The park became a Christmas fantasy, the parade filled the streets, Santa arrived for the children, and Sealy came together in a way that created something lasting.

Over the next several months, we will be sharing pieces of the stories behind the prior years’ Fantasy of Lights while inviting today’s businesses, residents, churches, schools, civic groups, organizations, and volunteers to be part of this milestone year.

Forty years later, the motto is still the same: Let’s be United for Sealy!

Did you know...

One of Sealy's earliest families left their mark on our community in more ways than one.

According to the 1880 Census, G.W. and Sallie Fowlkes lived in nearby San Felipe. Gabriel Wyley "G.W." Fowlkes wore many hats in the growing community, serving as a farmer, surveyor, and Justice of the Peace.

Today, the Fowlkes name can still be found in two places around town: Fowlkes Street in downtown Sealy and the grave of "Little Annie" Fowlkes in Sealy Cemetery.

Annie, the daughter of G.W. and Sallie, was born on January 6, 1882. Tragically, she passed away at just 18 months old after becoming caught in the belt and machinery at the gin. Her grave became the first burial in Sealy Cemetery. Prior to Annie's death, Sealy did not have a cemetery, and the railroad provided the land that would become the final resting place for generations of Sealy families.

In a bittersweet turn of history, Annie's sister Letitia was born just three days after Annie's passing.

In 1887, the Fowlkes family left Texas and moved to Charleston, Missouri. There, G.W. established a saw and planing mill that he later operated with his son Robert. He remained active in business and community affairs until his death in 1930 at the age of 81.

Recently, while researching Sealy's history, we uncovered more of the Fowlkes family story, including a family photograph and records tracing their roots back through Tennessee, Virginia, and even Wales.

It's a reminder that behind every street name, cemetery marker, and historic landmark is a story waiting to be told.

Saturday, May 30
Start with the special exhibit “Bypassed by Freedom but Building a Legacy,” sharing the stories of Mary Marks, Turner Morgan, Celia Allen, Joe Travis, and Simon Austin — five people whose lives shaped the story of San Felipe de Austin in powerful ways.

Then stop by Cast Iron Care from 10 AM to 4 PM and learn how cast iron cookware is cleaned, seasoned, and protected from the Texas humidity.

Sunday, May 31
Join the San Felipe Nature Walk in the Footsteps of Stephen F. Austin at 2 PM and explore the landscape, native plants, and natural resources that helped shape this part of Texas.
