Texas is home to four unique quail species, each playing an important role in the health and balance of our native ecosystems. These birds depend on diverse rangelands that provide quality nesting cover, protective brush, native bunchgrasses, and abundant food sources such as seeds, insects, and forbs.

At Wildlife Habitat Federation, we work alongside landowners to improve habitat through grazing management, native plant restoration, brush management, and conservation planning that supports both wildlife and working lands. Proper quail management not only benefits these iconic birds but also improves soil health, plant diversity, pollinator habitat, and the overall resilience of Texas landscapes.

provided a mix of native grass and wildflower seeds that are now beckoning to birds and pollinators alike. Blessed rains brought on a show of colors that will be followed by native grasses suited for the site.

Rejoice, birds and pollinators, ...and bird and pollinator watchers!

During every week from April to September there are, on the average, ten wild plants coming into first bloom. In June as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them.

Over 95% of Texas land is privately owned. There is no large-scale conservation outcome in this state — water quantity, migratory bird corridors, carbon storage, flood resilience, etc.— that does not run through a private landowner's decision. 's model converts that reality into an opportunity. By meeting landowners where they are, with practical planning and program support, we unlock ecosystem services at the landscape scale that public agencies cannot purchase or mandate.

May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity

Just like people, cattle perform best when they have a balanced and diverse diet.

When given access to diverse forage types, cattle are often able to select what their body needs most at that time, whether it's protein, energy, or minerals. A healthy mix of grasses, legumes, forbs, and minerals helps support weight gain, reproductive success, immune function, and overall herd performance. Diverse pastures don't just benefit cattle; they improve soil health, increase drought resilience, and create better wildlife habitat as well. Good grazing management and forage diversity go hand in hand when it comes to building productive, sustainable operations for the future.

It’s a busy day to be a bee!
Join WHF in celebrating this beloved winged pollinator today, , and every day.

Did you know?:
• Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination.
• Social bees, such as honeybees and bumblebees, often live in hives or nests, above or below the ground, while most solitary bees nest in the ground.
• Bees have four wings: the two wings on each side hook together to form one larger pair when flying and then unhook when they’re not flying.
